Paper Mario: The Origami King (Coming in July 17th)

Postby FireyPaperMario » Thu May 14, 2020 9:21 am

Paper Mario has finally returns with another new adventure on the awesome Nintendo Switch!

Here's the YouTube video announcing the game, since I'm bad at describing stuff in full details for some reason:

Let's just cross our fingers that this new installment of the RPG series ISN'T part of the Sticker Star & Color Splash head canon!

Color Splash was great and this looks to be taking similar creative strides with a hint of madness. The battle system also looks incredibly fun. Saying I'm excited would be an understatement.

Literally gobsmacked! Was not expecting this at all, and the fact that it is releasing in 2 months just makes this whole situation even more unreal!

It looks promising, but I'm very wary about the battle system. I hope it's better than color splash's and sticker star's. I'm one of those people that hope they return to the original formula with battles, an exp system, and badges. Also REALLY hoping they don't force you to collect a specific item to defeat a boss. I have no idea why they thought that was a good idea. Keep the creativity, keep up the engaging exploration factor, but please make the battles not a complete waste of time....

I presume you've seen the battle preview? It looks to be something completely new, and I find that very exciting.

You can also see in various screenshots on the games' regional websites that the player's HP stat changes over the course of the game, and the trailer showed a different quality of boots. So manners of progression are definitely present, as well.

The game seems pretty good from what we've seen. The overworld exploration looks very similar to Color Splash's, which I like because it was one of that game's strongest parts. The battle system, from the minuscule amount of footage we've seen of it, looks a little gimmicky, but interesting and I'm excited to see where they go with it. It seems that Paper Mario is still using generic designs for the characters, which isn't a huge issue, but it's still a little disappointing if you ask me. In the first three games, the sheer diversity of the character designs was simply amazing, but I digress. Overall, I'm really excited for not only the game itself, but also the impact it may have on the rest of the series.

Do any of y'all SMBX members like Open World games? Well good news! The Upcoming Paper Mario the Origami King is planned to be an "Open World" Mario RPG! As explained by GameXplain in this video:

Any thoughts about that?

I was hoping that would be the case. It was kind of clear from the trailers and images we already had but it's definitely nice to get some clarification. I've never thought that separate, short levels really fit the Paper Mario series anyway.

Welp the game is a step in the right direction, but I guess they're still making baby steps

Origami is just a Japanese thingy.

When a western guy first purchasing this and is first time playing a Mario game like this, it sure be strange that didn't know what a origami is.
The word origami has been part of the english language since like the 1960s, too. I don't think there'd be too much confusion among the western audience. It's pretty well-known.

So from what I heard/saw, battles are still pointless aside from collectables costing a crazy amount of coins

Pointless aside from things that don't make them pointless? Watching the treehouse it seemed like they're a pretty important resource gathering mechanism throughout the game. Battling every enemy in your path will likely be as superfluous as in any other RPG, but it looks like (aside from the battle system itself looking fun) you'll need the rewards you get from them in order to properly progress, which in some ways is a more organic way of progressing through the game than an increase in stats at certain theresholds. Despite a lack of a form of EXP (as was present in 64, TTYD, SPM and CS), this looks to me like a further improvement over experiments in the previous two titles.

Well I certainly hope so, but from what I heard from numerous reviews from people who have played this game early that I've listened to such as GameXplain, they basically tell you that you can pretty much skip these fights and still be able to fight the bosses relatively easily. Even looking at the gameplay footage, I saw that there were +1000 coin blocks and confetti bags that fill your confetti bag completely outside of battle. Idk man, I'll still get it, but I don't understand why intelligent system has to be so stubborn about not adding EXP. I hope that they at least make the upgrades expensive or something since they basically flood you with coins.
