Super Mario 100 II

Postby SBells27 » Wed Jan 01, 2020 3:18 am

Note: This episode is compatible with 1.4.4 and 1.4.5, meaning it's a 38A episode.

Hello everyone and welcome to Super Mario 100 II! A sequel to my first episode, 'Super Mario 100'. The episode is overall longer than my first episode with new and big features on it.

- There are in total 100 levels.
- There are in total 12 worlds and 1 mini world.
- The secret stars from the first episode were removed (mostly because me and some people thought they were tedious)
- There are now toad houses, one in every world!
- There are now purple coin levels, one in every world!
- There are new level concepts and ideas too!

In Level 4 there are moving layer pipes and it seems they don't move right at all. Could you please check that?

Is the problem on 1.4.5? I currently can't check it right now because i'm not home but I remember the moving layer pipes working well while verifying the episode. Either way I'll take a look when I can later.

I'm playing on 1.4.4, I still don't have 1.4.5.

(also does this use 1.4-only features later on?)

Yeah, not many features but there are 1.4 features. (I made the episode on 1.4.4 so don't particularly worry about that)

also, there's a softlock in 2-3 "Donut Plains" where if you enter the pipe guarded by spin-blocks playing as Peach, you can't leave. Peach doesn't have a spin jump, and can't progress. The Pipe isn't double sided, so you can't leave either.

I probably forgot to set the game as Mario and Luigi only since I built the episode around Mario and Luigi's gimmicks and movements. I'll fix that issue when I get home (on Jan 5th since I'm on the farm  )

Quick Note: 5 after-game levels will be added soon! I also fixed the trailer video that was actually broken (and the first screenshot), thought it wasn't working just on my cellphone.

I have no idea why the bug happened before but the pipe layer worked right away upon retrying.

Now, upon entering the Toad House, I'd say the 1-time RNG is a bit mean.

2-2 is practically impossible due to the same kind of bug Cedur mentioned.

janky engine, mate

Eclipsed reported lots of other bugs (including the world map softlock) and unfair design on his server, this episode really annoyed him.

Yeah that's true. Sorry to respond late, but I'm planning to move on to something forward so I'm not really planning any bonus levels on this game anymore. I'll fix the bugs when I get to though.

While I think Eclipsed went a little too harsh on it (imo), I find the problems he mentioned in this episode to be fair and valid. If you guys want to see what i'm planning to do next, it's going to be a complete departure from the SM100 series. (It wasn't just because I realized how flawed my episode was thanks to Eclipsed's review, I have been planning this since around December actually).

I don't know how the bugs occur honestly. It seems like they occur sometimes randomly or not at all and I have no idea why.

As I said, janky engine. I already knew this from TGE6 and TGE9, it really looks like it's the fault of the engine and its shitty "first / second / third exit" system.
Are you considering switching to SMBX2 for this reason (and others)?

Yeah I'm planning to switch to SMBX2. I tried to experiment with 38A, but it didn't worked the most well after realizing some of its flaws. Didn't know bullet bills were a lot worse on 1.4.5 until I saw Eclipsed's livestream of my episode for example. Considering that I heard so many good things about SMBX2, I think it will be worth to give it a shot.

Yeah SMBX2 sometimes crashes the game unexpectedly but I never heard that it janks up levels or the world map like that.
