Scoobert's attempts at level design

Postby Scoobert555 » Tue Sep 03, 2019 1:26 pm

Hi everyone! My name is Scoobert and you, without a doubt, don't know who i am. I've always envied people who know how to properly design mario levels, and have always wanted to become good at it too. So, I have made a level mainly to get adjusted to SMBX's level editor: Donut Falls. It is a very basic level, based off of the more linear levels of mario 3, rather than than the vast levels seen in many prominent episodes. Thinking about it now, it's probably WAY too simplistic, even for mario 3 standards, but I needed SOMEWHERE to start. It takes around 2 and a half minutes to beat in one attempt, and is moderately difficult. I'm still barely gripping the basics of level design, so any feedback helps!

It's a nice first level. also welcome to the forums, did you know that you can use custom graphics (sprites), from what I'm seeing you seem to have included things from different games which may or may not fit with others. in my opinion a little clashy on the second screenshot. you can for an example use a custom recolored Smw pipe to fit with the Smb 3 aesthetics. but if you're going for vanilla maybe try to be a little more considerate about using assets form different games. and instead of placing water backgrounds in a weird way like that, get custom water backgrounds which would suit your idea better. same goes for the wood slope at the edge. also placing the rikas block there doesn't look okay. it would be nice if you also change the coins placement as well. just go with what feels natural then you can go complex and weird.

It only downloads as a text file for me. I don't know why, but it's odd.

Yeah, I agree that I went overboard with the Rinkas. I second guess myself about difficulty all the time, so sometimes things end up way too hard

Not too bad for a first level. My first level was worse. It's been a while since I've seen anything with completely vanilla blocks. You must have used 1.3 for this one. The newest smbx version has extra blocks to help with the sloped wood blocks (though I can't remember if 1.3 actually has the blocks below).

So this image.

Looks better like this.

This is just my opinion though. Feel free to create a level however you'd like.
