(OUT OF DATE) The Golden Element level pack [VOLUME 2] Smbx2 PAL (Dusty oil mines added))

Postby Hammerless Penguin » Mon Sep 02, 2019 10:20 pm

Welp here it is. After another long hiatus on my project I decided to release a couple of more Neat levels thats going to be playable in my episode Super Mario and the 10 golden elements. These aren't the final versions of these levels so I would like to have some feedback of how well I did. Hopefully this thread gets some attention.

NOTICE: if some of the custom npcs have wonky death effects then that's a bug that's currently in the latest build of smbx2 for now. I've been told that its solvable with lunalua yet its so complicated since i'm new to that stuff. So i'm going to wait until the bug gets officially fixed. SMBX 2/MAGLX3/PAL is required to play these levels. smbx 1.4 and standard 1.3.0.1 are incompatiable maybe.....

Edit: Eruption Valley has once again been edited. I thought my first attempt at recreating the eruption gimmick from nsmb ect was sloppily done even with the added hotspots, So I decided to completely revamp it. It now behaves more similarly and game accurate to the original nsmb and its more easy to detect them. Hopefully this is an improvement. I recommend to have the volume up.

Now that I got that out of the way, lets get started.

The molten rocks raining from the sky is your biggest enemy in the level. This level is pretty difficult and unpredictable so take your time. ive seen very few episodes or levels that recreated this gimmick but they weren't executed very well imo. Credit goes to iForgot for the Volcanic rocks.

Another level that I made prior moving to smbx2. The level takes place in a polluted run down forest with an abandoned factory deep within and is now overrun by bowsers henchmen. I'm trying to tackle lesser used level themes in my episode to be a bit more unique. I know this has been done before but its still a fresh breath of air compared to desert, beach, mountain etc themes imo.

A smbx2 beta 3 compatible level. Its sorta frustrating to travel through the level since its so slippery and its easy to run into hanging icicles. Much like eruption valley you must watch your step.

This is level thats going to take place near the end of world 2. It has a major step up in difficulty compared to both dusty dunes 1 and 2. The fire and blaze bros are the most dangerous threat in this level. If there is any mistakes or bugs in this please let me know.

All these levels look really neat. The aesthetics are really unique and level design looks pretty decent. I wish I could run PAL to play them

EDIT: wait, quick question, can they work in 2.0 Beta 3?

Sunset Wilds should be beta 3 friendly. The others im not so sure. With the addition of PAL/beta 4 exclusive stuff like chucks, clear pipes, star coins, ect Im not exactly sure how the rest of the levels are going to turn out for you. But thanks for the feedback anyways.

Added in 29 minutes 33 seconds:
Heres another level thats compatiable with beta 3.

Enjoy rex's frozen cave.

I like how you got the frozen Rex from the painting and put it in the ice.
I played Eruption Valley, and it really felt like you were in a volcano trying to survive with lots of volcano elements. I really enjoyed it. My only gripes with the level were that the rocks felt too fast at times, especially if I was at the top of the screen, and the checkpoint could have been placed earlier in the level, as it was a really long trek to get to it, but the ending was very close by.
Good level, I liked it.

I actually really liked eruption valley. But eclipsed does have a point. The level was ruined by the main gimmick along with some npc placement. However I praise the level lay out, atmosphere, star coin placement and the fitting music. If you could make some kind of warning to the eruption gimmick so the player could know when it starts, move some of the buster beetles and place the checkpoint a bit more early, than this level could be pretty great. It’s a pretty unique level and better than most generic lava levels I’ve played before trust me on that.

5/10 imo
I’ll give an 8/10 if these problems will be fixed

Dystopian forest
7.6/10
It’s a pretty good level, the atmosphere is great, the music also fits with the dark and pretty depressing theme of the level and the robotic goombas, koopas, plants and rexes where pretty cool as well. The star coin placement is alright but not as fun as eruption valley. My main problem is when you reach the factory with the bottom branching path with the vines and chains. I felt like it could be much better but I absolutely loved it when you reached the elevator section and it started to play the Kevin Macleod elevator music. Absolutely gold. The end of the level felt I bit awkward with the sudden toxic lake but overall this is a pretty decent level.

I’m planning on playing some more of your levels but please fix eruption valley. I really liked it.

Eruption Valley 1 is really poorly designed. The gimmick of this level is using those rock spawn era but the issue is that whenever you reach a point where the spawned is on screen depending when you’re each it, it spawns on different times. In essence, the player most likely thinks they’re safe and then something they don’t know about damages them. The other way to play the level is to wait around 10 seconds on each entirely new screen before proceeding. But frankly, speaking that does not lead to having fun. So the two options are either wait a ton or don’t wait and due to that memorize the level of where rocks spawn.

An easy fix to this issue is to add some form of visual indicator. For example, adding darker tiles to where the rocks fall on would signify to the player they should be more cautious around that area since they know a rock will fall there.

Moreover, some of the other design difficulty-wise is rather based on the player didn’t know it was here so they died. For example, on the leaf path on the clear pipe, there’s buster beetle that throws a large shell immediately after you exit from the momentum. In order to not get hit the player has to jump to the left and stand at the pipe right on the second they leave. No one has that sort of reaction time so again the player has to know knowledge in advance. This issue is plagued sporadically throughout the level.

One thing I do like about the level are the star coin placement and they were added mini-challenges. Overall, Eruption Valley 1 is not a good level due to the reasons stated.
Thanks for the feedback about the level. These problems have been solved with a new update I gave to the level. Hopefully it helps

Thank you too. Glad you liked eruption valley and dystopian forest.

Here is the new update. I added new "hot spots" giving the warning of the collision course of the rocks. I've moved some buster beetles to make players less vulnerable as well

Much Much better. That’s a pretty cool, creative way to solve the problem. The buster beetles was still a bit of a nuisance, but they are definitely in better positions than they where before. You earned your 8/10.

Dusty dunes 1

Gameplay: 7/10
This level is actually pretty calming to play through. The gameplay, nice star coin placement and enemy choices really makes it fell like it was a level that came straight out the nsmb games. Like eruption valley the level has plant buster beetles except they throw smaller shells and are more easy to avoid. Good job on that. I actually enjoyed it better in eruption because I wasn’t in complete panick throughout the entire level. The gameplay is nothing really engaging but it earns 7. A good score.

Aesthetics: 10/10
It’s pretty easy to nail the environment of a desert. This level did it pretty great. No overloaded bgos and extra eyecandy or crap like that. It’s just an honest, straight forward level which I like.

Total: 8/10
A well done desert level. I’ll be looking forward into playing your episode.

Eruption Valley has been updated again. I thought the gimmick was sloppily done returning to the level so its been completely recreated. its now much more easier to avoid and it behaves more similarly to the nsmb games. Make sure to have the volume up. It will help.

The gimmick is much more solid now. And does behave more like the nsmb games. Good job. Better than before instead of having generators randomly placed.

You seem to be taking inspiration from a lot of Donkey Kong Country levels yes? I'd imagine you are quite the fan.

Yep. I have a couple of levels based on the game in my episode. But they aren’t going to be revealed until the episode is fully released.

Hey, this level doesn't have an exit and the tanks at the beginning are really buggy
Oh crap. I just realized I accidentally put the wrong version of the level file in the zip. There is supposed to be a smw exist and the tank treads which use to be minecart graphics was scrapped from the level entirely. I’ll fix it asap.

Edit: Updated link.

I have a little complaint with eruption valley.
Those fire geyser thingies should be improved. Its completely unpredictable when its gonna "pew"* the fire out, and it also happens really fast. Aside from that, great level.

*Im a fan of ceave gaming, if you are, you probably know that line where he said: "bullet blasters cant "pew" out their contents" or something like that.

I noticed the problem for quite awhile and im still trying to figure out a solution as much as i dont want to scrap the hazard. Come to mention some of these levels are now dated and probably buggy since a majority was made on PAl before beta 4. So you should expect some new changes to these levels when my episode is complete. If you want to try out more stable levels than try my latest level pack.

I sorta got the reference. I occasionally watch ceave gaming's videos too.

I now put a (dated) warning on the title of this thread to let users know that these levels may be incompatible with the latest version of smbx2.
