I still don't get your problem. You deleted the star, then what happened?
also you should seriously consider updating to X2, especially due to the editor's undo function which doesn't exist in 1.3

It's a little more than just replacing the star with a ball; you eventually need to attach the ball to the star's layer; and if you have a world map you might also need to fix the level exit accordingly
I didn't even begin to make the world map.

Use SMBX2 instead of 1.3 then.
But, like Cedur, I don't get the problem.

After adding the ? ball it already stays in place and disappears at the boss' death, other times it just doesn't show up.

Is it on the star's layer?
If it's not, it is always visible. If you want to make something appear when something dies, you need to put it on an invisible layer

And where's the invisible layer? I only find show, hide and toggle layers.

Ok. I instead planned to make a Zelda-themed level with the fire flower changed to a "Link powerup" where Mario is dressed as Link and gains the ability to shoot straight forward arrows as Link does.

Hi, I just returned from vacation. So, I am still stuck at making the ? ball exit.
Now I have finally did it! I just had to go to the Star layer and put the ? ball in. Thus there are messages in it.

Thank you. Here are the messages I added in the level:
Message Box 1: "Welcome in the Top Cave! This is where 'Top Man' from Mega Man 3 is living after his defeat, thus forcing him to retirement."
Message Box 2: "Now it's up to you to end this Robot Master once again! But be careful on the road ahead."
These two messages are both implemented in one block.
Boss Message: "HA HA HA! So, you thought I was supposed to appear in a Super Mario game? Yes, of course. And now, prepare to fight. I'm pretty sure you won't survive my spinning tops!"
Boss Defeat Message: "NO! This is not possible! I can't lose like this! I thought you were weaker than my long-life foe Mega Man... I was wrong! AAAAAARGH!"
And that's it. What do you think, do I have to edit something or it's all perfect?

BTW, finished another level for this, it's based off of Star Man's stage from MM5, but with enemies from other games, sections where you play as Beat, and Crush Crawfish from MMX3 acting as a miniboss

Finished another level for this, it's an SMW grassland but with a Thunder Lakitu chasing you, Sniper Joes, the turtles from the Gamerizer battle in MM7, and a boss at the end

2 things:
1. Not many people use 1.3 nowadays.

Anyway is my level perfect? About yours, I did not know what to do after entering the pipe and finding a teal Yoshi. Is the level beatable?
