Deep Into the Jungle

Postby bluestatic1991 » Fri Mar 22, 2019 12:46 am

Hello Everyone!

This is my first level that I have uploaded to the forums (others being lost or scrapped). This level is somewhat linear and more on the basic side, but I tried to keep it interesting with the theme.

FYI: This level was made with SMBX 1.3.0.1.

This looks cool, don't worry if the level is linear and straight, a level doesn't have to be long and complex to be awesome.

Hey I am glad you like the level! I do think straight forward levels are fun and are just as good as complex levels. I am planning on making complex levels in the future so this was somewhat a first step. Thank you for checking it out!

Ok, so I played the level, and here are my thoughts.

The level itself was pretty fun. I liked the details you put in, however, a bit of it clashed, like the SMB3 cave blocks and the SMW bushes. On that note, I didn't really understand why some of the bushes were stuck in the roof, as seen here.

I'm guessing they were meant to be foliage growing in the cave roof top, but I feel there would have been better graphics to use to represent this.
I also didn't really understand what those chain-like things in the ground were meant to be.
Overall, it looked quite nice aesthetically, but a bit of clash and confusing placements made it not look as good as it could have been.
However, the NPCs and Mario sprites blended very well, in my opinion.

Next was level design. The first section was pretty simple, with pipes and some gaps being the only real threat.
The next section was probably the most interesting, with the vines that carried you across the level. I like how there was an easy section before the harder one, to help the player get used to the concept. However, I felt it was a little easy anyway, so maybe you could have included falling projectiles from the top or something like that.

Music was good too, but it felt a little lonely and I didn't think it was too fitting for the environment.

My final score is a 6.5/10 or a 7/10. For a first level, it was pretty good, with only a few gripes I had. Well done!

You forgot to include many of the graphics, as MegaDood's screenshot clearly shows.

WOW lol! Thanks for a very generous score! The issue is that the graphics that I used didn't transfer over when I uploaded it to Google Drive. Therefore the level doesn't look nearly as good as it should lol. I am gonna have to take a look at this and figure out what the problem is. Also, what version of SMBX are you using?

Any suggestions on how to fix this? The graphics seem to be there on my end...

Looks like it's on MegaDood's end. The graphics are there for me. MegaDood, did you rename the level file?

Ah geez Thanks. I've never really seen myself as a review, more of a level designer, so I guess that's why.
