I've only been testing this in 1.3.0.1 so far since that's the version i'm used to but I plan to have it work for 1.4 and 2.0 as well

Oh cool, maybe you could make version specific things too, minor differences, like a level with smbx2 enemies for that version, and 1.4.4 exclusive items in the same level for the 1.4.4 version. Just an idea I had.

SMBX2 is not an issue. For 1.4 you'd have to remake all levels in that version (do not open your 1.3 levels in 1.4)

I really enjoy the overall vanilla-ness of this project. I'm still most fond of the cave/bush screenshot I've commented on in Discord.

You should still try to add a bit of decoration in the water section.

But that would be tough, considering it's vanilla graphics. Hopefully there will be some creative use of the vanilla background objects to liven up the levels, but the episode will be fine with or without them.
