Super Mario Bros 1 Adventures 2

Postby mitja » Sun Aug 19, 2018 1:18 pm

This is my second episode and is mostly based around SMB1 if you have played my first episode this one is quite similar but a few new elements are introduced. Also the stars in this episode now can be seen in the names of various level they are marked as x (I have actually used the * and it turned into x for some reason) since I use custom gfx packs on world map the red dots marking a secret don't exist anymore.

I'm currently up to Block Land. This is a pretty wacky episode so far, but also really fun. I've noticed 2 pretty big problems that need fixing though.
  • In one of the 8-bit land castles there's a Bowser Jr boss that can only be defeated with a Fire Flower, but there's only one fire flower in the entire level and you can't even get it unless you were already big Mario while entering the level.
  • In the Block Land challenge house, there's a room with with piranha plants but they're all horribly misplaced meaning that there's one that literally can't be killed (and therefore meaning the star can't be collected). I'll probably have to go into the editor to fix this.

You should probably fix those problems in an update. I'll let you know if there's any more once I've finshed the episode.

Edit: Never mind about the piranha plants thing, it seems to be just a random glitch. I restarted the game and now they work fine. The Bowser Jr boss is still a problem though.

I've now 100% completed this episode. After playing through the entire thing, I gotta say it's been a pretty interesting experience. The level themes and gimmicks often come as a surprise, and the insanely hard difficulty does add a certain spice. It was pretty fun having to choose between finding ways to "break" levels or just playing through the insane challenges the normal way. But like I said in my previous comment, there are some flaws and I did find some more, so here's the list:
  • While there's nothing wrong with an episode being hard, World 7 is a particularly nasty difficulty spike. Most of the World 7 levels are nearly impossible to beat without taking multiple hits, meaning you have to bring in a Super Leaf to fly over those levels unless you have the reflexes of a TAS program.
  • In some of the castle levels, water acts as lava and kills the player. I'm assuming it's just supposed to be really cold or boiling water, but either way it'd be better to let the player know beforehand through a text message, otherwise it becomes a case of trial and error gameplay.
  • Like in your previous episode, there's occasionally Bowser portraits that shoot lasers from the eyes. Being just 2 little dots, it's a pretty bad case of hitbox dissonance and appears nearly invisible most of the time.
  • The Challenge House in World 8 has enemies that don't have the be defeated due to a bug. If those enemies are irrelevant to the challenge then there's really no point in having them in the first place.
  • It's literally impossible to reach the secret exit in Level 10-2. It's obvious you intended for the player to fly through the lava tunnel, but due to being so long there's no way to make it through. I had to edit in a new platform to make it possible to reach.
  • If you beat Bowser early using the Hammer Suit in the final level, it becomes unwinnable and you have to reset the game.
  • This is more of a nitpick, but it's a little annoying how many of the levels share names. "Level C-1" exists in every world, for example. This could be fixed by instead having it be "Level (world number here)-C1" so that the levels have distinguished titles.
Despite the above, I did very much enjoy playing this episode. The length and challenges made it feel like a memorable journey. I still think you should make an updated version though, since it has the potential to be much better than it currently is.

Thanks for your feedback now I'll reply to those issues.

I have completed the episode myself and did a walkthrough which is being uploaded on youtube and I have completed every battle house and obtained every star in the episode. I see you're not that familiar with smbx as I am a bit more so there needs to be no level editing done.

Bowser Jr. problem yeah it is a problem but not really a major one it is a castle level and I wanted to make it a little hard.

The Battle Houses (or challenge houses that's how you called them), there were various problems with those levels but I have managed to fix most of them like the bullet bill issue.. all the piranhas can be killed I can assure that since I tested the episode like 5 times or so... and even did a walkthrough on youtube I got past those issues. The jumping piranha plant has a problem which I don't know how to fix they sometimes don't want to jump out of the pipe so you should make them your priority target and also volcano lotuses have the issue if they're the last enemy defeated they don't make the star appear so make sure to defeat volcano lotuses before the last enemy.

World 7 issue: I don't know if were talking about the same level but I managed to finish most of them without too much struggling as the one which I think you were talking about level 7-3 the part with moving various piranha plant and a lakitu chasing you yes I have also struggled through that and leaf has helped me a lot at least to reach the mid-checkpoint. In the castle levels the lava is actually colored purple not blue it is just a recolor of normal lava so it should be obvious also I had done some warnings in world 4 if I remember correctly with those deadly blocks and they appear in later worlds too a few times.

The bowser portrait enemy isn't my gfx so I don't know how to fix it sadly so the hitbox is wrong.

World 8 Battle House: I have wanted to honestly remove them but I decided to keep them you can defeat them or not depends on you.

"Impossible" secret exit in Level 10-2: No you got it totally wrong remember that one level from 8-bit land where you had to bounce on tweester enemies in an ice level? That's the same trick here but it's harder and you need to be careful not to kill it or yourself. The tweester is a bit higher than other enemies so you don't have to worry about getting hit except maybe it could happen by that lonesome podoboo at the start of the stage. Yeah I have disabled the flying trick in this level because that's not how you get to this key at all but still racoon and tanooki power-ups will help your balance on the tweester if you're having trouble and later defeat the enemies and poison mushrooms which can be defeated by being knocked upwards into lava. Again you don't need to edit anything you just need to keep your eyes open and think a little.

I am aware of the Bowser issue but there was a lot of other issues right in that part of the section so I'm happy that's the only thing wrong. Yeah I should've have put a warning there.

The level names level C-1 and level S-1 when I release my next smbx episode they're gonna be called something different.

I hope you'll play those certain levels again and try to see the things which I have mentioned that everything in the episode is possible. Also all my episode part videos have been pre-recorded so you can't say I have edited things in them (also I would have to edit the post and change the download link and I obviously won't do that because everything is true). The last episode video was recorded on 15.8.2018 which is way before the episode actually got released because I like myself to be prepared for things like this. I have proof I don't know if I should post it here since people will still play this episode and they probably don't wanna get spoilers like how many worlds are there.

I played your first episode a while back and it was pretty fun and challenging, so a sequel I thought it would be pretty cool. I finished the first world and so far it definitely improves on a lot of aspects. New fun elements, new level themes and some new cool features made this a pretty good experience so far! I think the world map looks a bit cheesy but I think that's rather more a nitpick, if anything.

I'll be looking forward for the rest of the worlds.
