Warped Mind

Postby Daring Tombstone » Tue Aug 29, 2017 12:37 am

This will be the first time I've uploaded a level so here it is. I wanted to show off a level from an episode I've been working on for a while now. It's one of the better ones in my opinion. I haven't used a forum in what feels like years so hopefully these links come out alright. Unfortunately I couldn't add checkpoints to the level because of how it works so take your time throughout your journey through the ghost house.

Has this kind of level been done before? Probably. Truth is I started working on levels back in 2014. My old laptop fried and I lost everything. Somewhat recently I ordered a thing online to take my old levels off the hard drive and started working on them again.

New download link for mp3 version of the music used. Thanks again for telling me the wma didn't work. I also fixed the level to actually play the mp3 format file since it took me 3 days to notice.

I can't even beat it. Is there even an exit?

Yeah there's an exit. If you need a hint read the spoiler.

Assuming you're getting stuck after ending up at the entrance of the ghost house again go left back to the beginning to change the path, getting rid of the fake ghost house.

Review of Warped Mind

This seems interesting...

Gameplay
So playing this wasn't so bad. At first, I was confused while playing this level because I don't know what's happening at the ghost house. It was not long until I realized that you had to go back and forth through the level to progress, which was pretty interesting. I suggest you add some indicator that the room is changing. I really liked how you did the twist at the end, which was very surprising and caught me off guard. The level felt a bit too long in my opinion, so I suggest adding a checkpoint somewhere halfway in the level.

7/10

Aesthetics
Ahh... the aesthetics. First of all, I suggest you add some more coins in the level, because there was not much and it felt bland. Enemy placement was fair enough. Scenery was fine outside the ghost house, but inside the ghost house felt bland. Also when I played this level the music was not playing. I checked it out and realized that the music was in .wma format and I don't think SMBX doesn't accept that. I suggest changing it to .mp3 or .ogg.

5/10

Conclusion
In conclusion, this level wasn't so bad at all. I actually find the part where you have to go back and forth interesting. Just need some more improvement and it's good to go!

6.5/10

Odd. The music played fine with mine but I was using the smbx version 1.3 so that might have something to do with it. I will change the music format immediately. Thank you for taking the time to play and review it. And I agree about the aesthetics. I have fairly old texture packs and didn't have much background objects to use for ghost houses. I might look into newer graphics packs for the future.
