Review - Yet Another Bowser Castle Level
Wow another one? Well nothing wrong with that, I enjoy castle levels alot. But will the Luigi man enjoy this one? Probably, who knows read the review to find out.
I made the decision to play as Luigi for this one, I was surprised to hear someone make use of a Super Mario RPG track for this. Most people end up using that SM64 which has gotten annoying by now, kudos to you for not picking that.
The intro toad was nice to see, I liked how you switched him to a normal toad after talking to him. Little things like that make me smile and remember that not everyone in the SMBX community doesn't care about details like that. At this point in the level, I'm past the chain climbing area and still have no clue as to what you mean by Bowser attacking from behind.
And then I found my first annoyance: the platform riding wires? yeah they're kinda hard to see on the background. I'd make them white, I thought it was a regular old jump across the platforms before the fall into lava thing. By the time I realised, it was too late.
Now I'm kind of seeing why you placed the bowser statues where you did, it makes it hard to just needlessly rush through a level, the minute you get right up to the statue you get hit by a fire ball.
And then boom: bowser. I quite liked the gimmick you did for him, usually he doesn't move very far so idk if you attached him to a layer or what. i feel like the whole fake bowser thing is a bit cliche though. At this point though I'm really wishing I had a power-up. Only giving a player mushrooms is kinda boring.
Your "mowser" certainly was interesting, I've never actually seen that implemented and enjoyed him. I see that being used cleverly with an smb3 bowser and having him throw the mechakoopas (sidenote).
At the final stage, throwing boss battles one after another got repetitive and annoying quick. You don't give the player any other powerups throughout that could potentially help them either. Once I finally got through it though it wasn't too shabby and then the final event. My god I died laughing at the repeated messages and then the random powerups falling down. Bowser looks hilarious too (not a bad sprite, just really freaking funny). The battle was probably the best as it wasn't frustrating. It was the most true to SMW too, but bowser just kind of sitting there was kinda boring. I'd make him move around a bit.
Atmosphere: well it sure felt like an smb3 castle level, not bad by any means but it was kinda meh. 7/10
Gameplay: played like an smb3 castle, again kinda meh. bosses were cool though 7/10
NPC Placement: placement was good, in just the right places. but not enough powerups in my opnion. 8/10
Graphics: no complaints here, everything fit nicely and looked nice. 10/10
Overall Score: 8/10 not bad, fun to play. kinda meh at times but still worth a play
