Background:
Far Traveler
Talot is a region full of steep cliffs and mountains. The valleys are full of dangerous monsters.
However, precious gems can be found inside of those mountains. Due to the surroundings, it is impossible for most creatures to reach those unharmed.
Aarakroca are one of the few races that can due to their ability to fly. Some small Aarakocra towns were formed on top of the mountains or at the side of cliffs, and many products can only be get through imports due to the lack of vegetation up in the mountains.
Due to the small range most Talot Aarakocra have to operate under, they have less flight speed than most other Aarakocra. On the other hand, they developed Darkvision in order to mine more efficiently. Their bodies are less agile and somewhat more muscular due to the hard work done in the mines.
Male Aarakocra are expected to work in the mines in some shape or form or help the community in other ways due to the Talot Aarakocra being isolated from other races and as such having much more tight-knit communities.
Talot Aarakocra are very owl-like: They have thick red, brown or grey feathers and a round head with slim eyes that are able to see even in the darkness of the mines. Their wings are muscular but small, and they are able to grab tools and objects with their wings as well as their talons. The thick feathers are able to warm them in the cold heights, meaning they don't need to wear thick clothes. Their beaks are rather short.
Although being trained to be a miner, Vardo always had another interest: Playing instruments, specifically the Lyre. However, the elders of the village didn't approve and forced him to abandon his passion. This led him to never feel much of a connection to his community, and he dreaded working in the mines.
One fateful night, Vardo packed together his Lyre, carved from rocks and adorned with wood in the shape of wings, and a Jasper Ring that was given to him at birth as well as some objects needed for survival together and fled from his hometown, hoping to find success and appreciation outside of the confines of the miner community. With nothing but an old map to guide him, his plan was to travel from town to town, entertaining others in Inns and Taverns.
He wants to learn a lot about the world due to never having experienced anything outside of Talot growing up. He's aware that he doesn't know much about the people he encounters, but strives to learn a lot about them, partly in order to incorporate these stories into his songs. Due to the dangerous monsters in the Talot valleys, Talot Aarakocra are used to sleeping in high places and tend to avoid low altitudes whenever possible. This of course is unnecessary in most places.
However, he does try his best to accomodate his lock of knowledge and tries not to cause any trouble. His Jasper Ring and his Lyre server as reminders of the positive aspects of his home.
The rich vegetation and the results of that are a new experience for Vardo; he had imagined them as being amazing but the reality is proving to be better than his expectations. However, he may be a bit too trusting of unknown people and environments, partly due to it being this way back in his hometown where everybody helped everybody.
Vardo has thick red feathers all over his body and is rather short at 4 ft 11 in. His brown eyes seem to gaze into your soul due to their shape.
All Eyes on You: Aarakocra are already an unusual race, and the unique appearance of Talot Aarakocra only adds to that.

World Map
Opening
For as long as anyone can remember, the militaristic nation of Anselmarn has been at war with its neighboring countries. Children born within the reaches of Anselmarn's major cities are taken away from their families to be trained as mindless soldiers to help fight the country's meaningless battles. Travelers are warned to avoid Anselmarn when traversing the land, but the alternatives to passing around the region are exploited for profit, and many poor and desperate folk ignore the warnings. Very few pass through the country, and those that do tell great tales of the burdens they suffered, including having to scavenge for resources when low, or having to abandon family and friends to flee from authorities. While conditions of the country are unbearable, no one in their right mind would ever form a rebellion, as such a movement would be extinguished immediately.
Among the captured trespassers, the rebellious Robin Morningstar, an adventurer from a far off land, has been put on a prison wagon alongside the semi-native Khiana Ealim, who poses a threat to the Anselmarn government should she acquire military secrets. The nomadic Kuhan Stocklens was detained by border patrol, while the virtuoso Aarakocra, Vardo Cylon, was captured while trespassing through a town. The most peculiar of those that were captured appears to be a silent Warforged, whose name has not been spoken of, yet his hands are bound with cuffs.
Hilda Moonstone, a revered paladin from her hometown, has been put on a secret escort mission. Alongside two additional squads of rebellious soldiers, she has been tasked with transporting a prison wagon to the adjacent country of Selvera, freeing the prisoners from the iron grip of Anselmarn, and the punishments they would have faced if they had been escorted anywhere else. Knowing how harsh the government would have treated these prisoners, Hilda agreed to transporting these prisoners.
Passing through Anselmarn proved easy, yet the real challenge was passing through Blackgate, the large barrier between the borders of Anselmarn and Selvera. When Hilda knew they were out of reach of Anselmarn officials, she freed the prisoners from their shackles, and ordered them to follow her lead, as they would pass themselves off as refugees. The group approached and stood before the towering Blackgate cautiously, and their adventure into a new world was about to begin... yet it was halted by a dozen soldiers approaching them and asking them for their identity and documents to affirm their passing is legal.

"Normally I'd just sneak past..." Robin internally muses, keeping a decidedly neutral face. Truthfully, he's never dealt with border control outside of Decemia and its surroundings and given that he's a veritable legend back there, they just let him by without a word. So right away Robin was already having new experiences. It wouldn't be a half bad start, if he knew what to actually do here.
The unknown hero absentmindedly plays with the sapphire necklace upon his neck, avoiding saying a word. Attracting attention from his accent alone would not be a smart idea and he knew just by his clothing and hair he was already distinctive enough, so he stood his ground and hoped that the Paladin lady had a plan. Even if it was just 'beat their arses and get out of there.' Robin would play along, but he also doubted that a Paladin would want to take that approach. The adventurer didn't particularly want to either.
With nothing to do but await the Paladin's action, Robin finally took the time to sneak a glance at his new companions: on the prison wagon he had more been busy internally moping about how he let himself get captured, so he hadn't really bothered taking them in. Yes, they certainly looked to be an interesting lot, even just from a cursory glance. Perhaps they'd make good travelling companions after all.

So far, Vardo has had little trouble on his journey: He may have lacked money a few times and has gotten into some conflicts, partially due to his race, but he always managed to turn things around despite his lack of knowledge about these foreign lands. In this case though, he really wished he'd actually prepared for where he was going to go.
His old maps have usually proven to be reliable enough for him to use Guiding Hand to lead himself to the next city where he would then locate an Inn or Tavern to earn some money or rest, but in this case it seems his maps were severely outdated: The nation of Anselmarn has undergone quite some changes from the looks of it, but those were only apparent after he has landed in Rabentau, one of the nation's major cities.
Usually, he is met with some curiosity and suspicion after arriving in a new place, but he's never experienced something like this: He got detained almost immediately after landing, and so he ended up on this prison wagon. He didn't dare speak up, even he could tell that this would be a bad idea and may even have led to his immediate death. The tension was so thick that you could slam a pickaxe into it, and he saw most of the other captives throwing some curious glances his way.
Not even the apparent liberation by a female Paladin managed to calm them: She did promise to lead them to safety, but Vardo was not so sure as to how she would do that...
(((OOC Note: Due to arriving by using Guiding Hand and not having been able to have a long rest, Vardo starts with one spell slot used up)))

Hilda was calm and confident - she felt she operated best under pressure. Although she had no intention of entering the heat of battle, she was prepared to handle whatever these soldiers were going to throw at her. It was nothing she hadn't dealt with in the dwarven lands, stubborn as many dwarf kingdoms were to allow outsiders onto even the exterior of their mountains.
Hilda believed that these soldiers were on the side of good, though, much as the majority of her fellow dwarves ultimately were, and she wanted nothing more than for these poor refugees - as was not entirely inaccurate from her perspective - to find a home safe from the oppression of the Anselmarnian military. She nodded to reassure herself and stepped forward, laying a hand on her sword but not truly planning to pull it out (yet).
"Good morning," she said to the solider. She had no intention of lying to the solidiers - it wasn't totally wrong to call the people she was escorting refugees. "I am a paladin of Odin, traveling to the northern human lands to spread the goodwill of my deity." Hilda gestured at the holy symbol held around her neck, proof that she was a true devotee to the dwarven god. "I'm transporting these refugees from Anselmarn - they are without a home or any kind of security. All I'm hoping for is their safety from that despotic kingdom that has done them so much wrong; please let us through."

Alexis's day has been a peculiar one indeed. He was getting ready to leave his temporary home in the heart of Finsterburg when a polite knock came from his door. It was the City Watch, trying their best to inform Alexis that he should come with them as he was the subject of an investigation involving renegade wizards. It was flimsy. Alexis's best guess was that they knew what he was up to and was dealing with him by force. Crude, but he had prepared for this. A half-baked lie to get something of help and he closed the door, to leap out his window and make a run for it. The good news was it threw those two completely for a loop. The bad news is a rather burly dwarf blocked his way.
Choosing between one dwarf and several guards now hunting him down, Alexis chose the former. The dwarf whispered to him to play along if he wants to live, and, sensing the truth behind the words, he complied. What followed was a grandoise but utlimately harmless display of brutality and making an example. The two didn't talk much past that, Alexis, realizing that he's in unknown territory, has been wisely leaving his destiny up to someone more knowledgable and wise than he is.
His last instructions given was by the Dwarf ally, who told him to act natural. He's been completely motionless since, electing to lie down in the wagon and wait until he's in better circumstances than the ones he's in now.

The soldiers look at the ensemble presented before them, and they all seem rather bewildered that anyone would bother to come to Blackgate in a time such as this. An older, tougher-looking soldier with a rather gruff voice pipes up from the crowd of men. "If you're coming to Selvera to seek refuge from Anselmarn, you've come to the right place. We've been letting people through Blackgate secretly for the past month, and the regime has no idea about it."
The soldiers gradually disperse, heading back for the large wall that spans from one side of the valley to the other. As the iron gates slowly open, you are all motioned into the land that lay before it them, and a warm sunlight washes over the valley. Your freedom awaits.

"Thank you. We appreciate your patronage," Hilda said, bowing to the soldiers who had shown themselves to be as virtuous as they come. She guided the prisoners through Blackgate, and pointed to a city that could be seen far on the horizon. "That is Fleetpoint. You should be able to find lodging there - it's one of the safer cities in this kingdom. Certainly much better than Anselmarn. Come." She walked off towards the city, guiding the wagon to come with her.

Robin finally takes the chance to exit the wagon and just walk along now that he can. As he does, he clears his throat and speaks up. "Right, right! We got through." He declares in his distinctive Decemian accent, finally letting go of his necklace with a cheery smile on his face. He adjusts his cape, given to him long ago as celebration for his efforts as a Decemian war hero. It wasn't anything spectacular, he knew as much - it was just a simple blue cape with white lining - but Robin was happy with it nonetheless. Even in a foreign land, the cape let him recognize himself.
"Why don't we all introduce ourselves? You know. Just to get closer." Robin suggests, still smiling. "I'm Robin Morningstar! I'm from a place called Decemia, doubt you've ever heard of it."

"I believe you all already have an idea of who I am," Hilda says. "I am Hilda Moonstone, a paladin of Odin. I come from the town of Dorme in the south of Selvera."

As the gate slowly disappeared behind the horizon and there was no sign of the soldiers changing their minds, Vardo could feel everyone on the wagon becoming somewhat more relaxed. Not long after they cleared the gate, a human jumped out of the wagon and asked for everyone to introduce themselves.
Not wanting to be restrained by the wagon, Vardo jumped out of it and landed close to Hilda, who just introduced herself. He probably already had everyone's attention based on his exterior alone, so there's not any harm in doing things to stand out.
"Greetings, my name is Vardo Cylon, and as you may have noticed I am an Aarakocra. I'm from the Talot Mountain region and fled from my hometown in order to become a travelling Bard." He tried to think of an appropiate gesture for thanking Hilda, and luckily she was a Mountain Dwarf. Due to Talot Aarakocras specializing in mining, he was somewhat aware of how they acted.
He bowed down and tried to find words fitting the circumstances: "I would like to take this opportunity to thank you, Hilda, for rescuing me, as well as everyone else here, out of this utterly hopeless situation."

"It was my duty," Hilda replied. She thought nothing of rescuing prisoners from the clutches of a corrupt empire - it was the least she could do to spread the goodwill of her deity.

Up until everyone started talking Kuhan barely noticed he was in a wagon filled with other people, he didn't need to pay attention to them so he didn't. When Robin asked everyone to introduce himself he went to get up and as he got up he noticed a lifeless husk of some sort of robot just lying there in the back of the wagon. This made him want to get out and leave even quicker than he wanted originally.
"I'm Kuhan Stocklens, I'm not looking to be a jerk right now, but I'd rather just get transported to the nearest town and split up from all of you, I prefer working alone. If I stay with you lot I don't feel like I'll enjoy my time much." Said Kuhan trying not to sound rude.

Robin gets a good laugh out of Kuhan's words. "Come on now! What's wrong with having a few buds around to adventure with?" He asks, running a hand through his hair. "The wilds aren't safe, my friend. You'd be best sticking around!"

"Helping a group is not really my thing, I can't do it. If you give me something to do on my own then sure, but otherwise I probably won't be of much help" Kuhan claimed trying not to sound arrogant while saying it and showing visible signs of awkwardness.

"I see there's no convincing you to let me leave, alright then I'll go with you, besides I am looking for new things to do all the time, and I haven't traveled in a group of more than a couple yet" Said Kuhan slowly starting to think more positively of this whole ordeal.

Vardo was surprised by Hilda's cold attitude - he used to believe that most Dwarves were kind-hearted. He tried to relieve tension, but now he only felt more uncomfortable.
Attempting to break the ice, he tried asking Hilda about her profession: "So, excuse me for my ignorance, but I have lived most of my life in relative isolation from the rest of the world up in the mountains. I am doing my best to learn the ways of the world, but I still have a long way to go. Would you mind enlightening me on the precise duties of a Paladin? I've never met one in person."

Hilda turned to Vardo. "I am a holy warrior of the god Odin, sworn to protect all that is good in this world. I came up from the dwarven lands to aid those traveling into Selvera. If I could, I would strike down the evil rulers of Anselmarn, but it seems that that's not wise at this time. For most of my life, I protected my town and people from external threats, but I have come to aid those in need, and strike down villainy where it stands."

Khiana was having an off day. First, she was stuck on a bandwagon after being captured, and not on a heist. Just out of the blue, guards took her off the street she was loitering on. She could count on one hand d how many times that happens. She had noticed the man sitting across from her twirling what appeared to be a rather valuable necklace. She admired it, and if they would come to know each other well, she just might take it and use it for bail.
After being unexpectedly released, she looked upon the rest of the companions. Most of them seemed like people willing to do what's right instead of what the government wanted - what a breath of fresh air that is. However, she reassured herself there would surely be no disputes over treasure we all find. While she was no stranger of working with a team, she is a stranger to sharing nowadays. Whether or not they succeed, she's always the only surviving member of a big heist.
She nodded to the others. No time for talking.

Robin looks at the rough-lookin' lady who just nodded and said nothing else. "Hey there! You stickin' around with us?" He asks, giving a wave. "A name might be nice if you are!" He follows up with a quick laugh.
