M37: Peak Oil, 200 Years Too Soon - Postgame (Player analysis)

The popular forum game that separates the good from the bad, the strong from the weak, and the loose-cannon cops from the slightly schizophrenic. That's all after we figure out who's who, of course.

M37: Peak Oil, 200 Years Too Soon - Postgame (Player analysis)

Postby Julia Pseudo » Mon Apr 03, 2017 5:50 pm

Alright, role PMs have been sent out and the game is finally ready to start...

The year is 1855. The setting, the American West. A team of gangsters, commissioned by a time-traveling oil tycoon from the year 2180 named Big Doyle and led by legendary outlaw Jonny "The Fastest Gun in the West" Peterson, has infiltrated the once-peaceful mining town of Gunshot Gulch, Nevada in order to dig up a plentiful source of oil located below the surface. Oil is exceptionally rare in the late 22nd century and Doyle plans to bring the gallons he would dig up back to his own time, where he will sell it for trillions of euros.
The gangsters' only opposition is the 13 innocent townspeople of Gunshot Gulch who are determined to protect their village. Well, that's not totally right. Thankfully, Doyle was followed back in time by a Time Cop who has taken a vow to prevent the timeline from being altered and to stop the villainous oil tycoon at any cost. Unfortunately, he's already failed the first part, what with making his presence known to villagers in 1855 and all. But that's alright; he can still succeed in the second.
Oh yeah, and there's some prospector who wants all the gold in Gunshot Gulch for himself or something too, no matter who he has to kill. The townspeople will have to deal with all this in...

M37: Peak Oil, 200 Years Too Soon
Format: Roleflip - 18 Players
This is a roleflip game. Since every player is a unique character, their specific role will be identified when they are killed (by default). However, cardflip colors are still included.

The Gangster Squad
Big Doyle: A greedy oil tycoon from the year 2180. He is the diabolical mastermind behind all of this, and can use cloaking technology to alter his appearance to appear blue if no autopsy is performed on him. (TheDinoKing)
Jonny "The Fastest Gun in the West" Peterson: A legendary outlaw in 1850s Nevada. As long as he's alive, he will be able to kill one player on even-numbered nights, thanks to his incredible quick draw. (Waddle Derp)
Black Bill Redford: Named for his ashen face thanks to his work with explosives, Bill can place a bomb on one player each night that is rigged to explode if that player dies; if so the player will cardflip black with no name revealed. The bombs will decay by the next night. (Supershroom)
Mr. Skull: 160 years before he joined the ghost pirate crew, Mr. Skull was a gangster in the Old West. He spies on other players and gives them good bones and calcium, and can visit one player each night to eavesdrop on any host PMs they received. (Sanct)
(All members have contact with each other and conspire to kill one player each night.)
Goal: Eliminate the Prospector and equal or outnumber the townspeople.

The Townspeople
Doc Fesstival: The doctor who performs the autopsy on players every morning and night after someone dies. If he dies, the roleflip mechanic will be retired in favor of regular cardflips, since he won't be able to identify the bodies. He can also choose to permanently retire and disable this ability during the night from Night 2 onwards, which will be announced to the whole game. (Zeldamaster12)
Time Cop: A mysterious time cop from the future who doesn't play by the rules. He's extensively researched the population of Gunshot Gulch and can inspect one player each night to learn that player's cardflip color. (MECHDRAGON777)
Sheriff Westin: Gunshot's sheriff, who has been set aside in his inspection capabilities by the Time Cop. He's looking to build up a posse to combat the gangsters himself, and can reveal his role to one player each night. (ShadowStarX)
Crazy Carl Williams: If Jonny Peterson is the fastest gun in the west, Carl Williams is the craziest. He can kill one player each night, but will lose this ability for one night if he kills an innocent. (glitch4)
One Horse: The only horse in this town, he can sit on one player each night to prevent that player from being night killed. Obviously, he can't sit on himself. (Nanaya Jacob)
Eric the Bartender: Has no ability, but cardflips blue if not identified by Doc Fesstival. (thehelmetguy1)
Lester the Kid: Regular townsperson (Danny)
Timmy Claymore: Regular townsperson. (Timmy Claymore)
Frank Strange: Regular townsperson. (PixelPest)
Vinny, the general store owner: Regular townsperson. (Megar)
The Texan Smoker: Regular townsperson. (Ness-Wednesday)
Barney the Carnie: Regular townsperson. (witchking666)
TNT Tyrone: A legendary former mercenary who previously worked with Jonny "The Fastest Gun in the West" Peterson. He has been retired for years, but will appear guilty if not identified by Doc Fesstival. (King of Eterity)
Goal: Eliminate the gangsters and prospector.

The Prospector
Ol' Ben, the Prospector: A crazed and greedy prospector who is obsessed with taking Gunshot Gulch and its oil for himself. Each night, he can kill one player. He can also protect himself by hiding in a hole if someone tries to kill him, rendering him immune to night kills. People don't think of him as a bad guy normally, so he cardflips green if not identified by Doc Fesstival (revealing his stolen gold). (Doesntpostverymuch)
Goal: Be the last player standing.

Role PMs

Role PM wrote:You are Big Doyle! You are the greedy oil tycoon from the year 2180 who's behind everything that has transpired in Gunshot Gulch. You brought cloaking technology from the future back with you, and can use it to disguise yourself to even the Time Cop, appearing blue unless Doc Fesstival performs an autopsy on your corpse. Additionally, you will conspire with your allies in the Gangster Squad to kill one player each night.

Assisting you are <player> (Jonny "The Fastest Gun in the West" Peterson), <player> (Black Bill Redford), and <player> (Mr. Skull).

Your goal is to eliminate the prospector and equal or outnumber the townspeople.
Role PM wrote:You are Jonny "The Fastest Gun in the West" Peterson! You are a legendary outlaw feared for your quick draw by the townspeople of Gunshot Gulch, and you have been hired by Big Doyle to take over the town and help him strike oil. On even-numbered nights, you can pull your gun on someone to kill them. Additionally, you will conspire with your allies in the Gangster Squad to kill one player each night.

Assisting you are <player> (Big Doyle), <player> (Black Bill Redford), and <player> (Mr. Skull).

Role PM wrote:You are Black Bill Redford! You are an ashen-faced explosives expert and accomplice to Jonny "The Fastest Gun in the West" Peterson, who has called on you to help with his latest scheme. Each night, you can place a bomb on one player. If the player is killed by the next night, the bomb will explode, destroying the body and making it unidentifiable (the player will cardflip black and no role will be revealed even with Doc Fesstival's help). This does not affect the Time Cop's inspection ability. Additionally, you will conspire with your allies in the Gangster Squad to kill one player each night.

Assisting you are <player> (Big Doyle), <player> (Jonny "The Fastest Gun in the West" Peterson), and <player> (Mr. Skull).

Role PM wrote:You are Mr. Skull! You are an undead symbol of chaos and destruction and have aligned yourself with history's greatest villains. Role PM wrote:You are Doc Fesstival! You are an old country doctor who performs all the medical work in Gunshot Gulch. When players die in the morning and night, the town will call upon you to perform an autopsy and identify the exact roles of the bodies for everyone to hear. If you feel this is unsafe, you may choose to permanently retire from this role during the night on Night 2 or later(which will be anonymously announced the next morning), and you will of course be unable to perform your job if you're dead.

Your goal is to eliminate the Gangster Squad and prospector to protect the town at all costs.
Role PM wrote:You are the Time Cop! You were sent back in time from your home era of 2180 to assist the town of Gunshot Gulch in apprehending Big Doyle and his gangster cronies before they do irreparable damage to the timeline. Your goal is to eliminate the Gangster Squad and prospector to protect the town at all costs.

You've decided to build up a posse to find and defeat Jonny "The Fastest Gun in the West" Peterson and his mysterious benefactor, and can reveal your role to one player each night.

Your goal is to eliminate the Gangster Squad and prospector to protect the town at all costs.
Role PM wrote:You are Crazy Carl Williams! While Jonny Peterson may be The Fastest Gun in the West, you are the craziest - and you have nowhere to stay outside of Gunshot Gulch. Each night, you can shoot and kill one player. While you may be a little crazy, you still care about your fellow man and will not kill a player on the next night if you kill an innocent.

Your goal is to eliminate the Gangster Squad and prospector to protect the town at all costs.
Role PM wrote:You are the One Horse in Gunshot Gulch! And you know... somehow, you might be mistaken for a human. Maybe. You can imagine yourself as walking around like a person or something. I don't know. I didn't. Each night, you can sit on one player to protect them from being nightkilled. If you are successful, the following message will be included in the phase transition message the next morning:

You cannot sit on yourself, obviously.

Your goal is to eliminate the Gangster Squad and prospector to protect the town at all costs.
Role PM wrote:You are Eric the Bartender! While you are a normal townsperson, you have quite a reputation in Gunshot Gulch for being the one everyone talks to when they're having problems. For this reason, you might be mistaken for having some special abilities among the town and you will cardflip blue if your corpse isn't identified by Doc Fesstival.

Your goal is to eliminate the Gangster Squad and prospector to protect the town at all costs.

You've since gone straight, but the Time Cop and most townspeople know you as their enemy, so you will cardflip red if your corpse is not identified by Doc Fesstival.

Your goal is to eliminate the Gangster Squad and prospector to protect the town at all costs.
Role PM wrote:You are Ol' Ben, the Prospector! You are an elderly oil prospector and, unbeknownst to anyone else, you've been trying to get your hands on the oil under Gunshot Gulch for as long as you can remember - specifically, last Wednesday afternoon. Each night, you can kill one player with your pickaxe. Additionally, you live in a hole out in the desert that is unknown to anyone else in the town, so you will be safe from being killed at night. If someone makes an attempt on your life, the following message will be included in the phase transition message on the next morning:
Protected wrote:Someone tried to kill <you> last night, but they were nowhere to be found!
The town thinks of you as a harmless old man, your name lost to history, and only Doc Fesstival has diagnosed your obsessive tendencies, so you will cardflip green if he does not identify your corpse.

Day 2
Doesntpostverymuch was a very troubled miner. 2 days ago, he had decided he was going to take the town of Gunshot Gulch for himself in the chaos of the gangsters' strike on the town. From his secret base on the outskirts of town, he had been planning the systematic deaths of the whole town. But when he was discovered by the town for shady comments made early on, he crumpled under the pressure. He attempted to bargain with the town for immunity in exchange for offing the gangsters with his pickaxe, but they ultimately refused. He suddenly revealed that he never needed them, and pulled out a jetpack that he had stolen from MECHDRAGON777's abandoned time machine. Before he could get away, though, the townspeople grabbed him and hanged him in the center of town.

The office of Doc Fesstival issued an autopsy, identifying him as crazed local miner Ol' Ben, the Prospector!

Night 3
glitch4 got up bright and early after staying out late the previous night, stalking his target. He was determined to stop the gangsters at all costs, and as the craziest gun in the west, he believed that all the responsibility fell to him to do so. Excited after his exploits last night, he paraded into the town square carrying the body of his victim King of Eterity.

"I got one of 'em!" he shouted to the townspeople, stopping at every house.
But just as he threw the body to the ground, it exploded, destroying all the evidence.
King of Eterity has died! The corpse was unidentifiable.

The shockwave from the explosion sent glitch4 flying into the general store, the impact breaking his neck.
glitch4 has died!
The office of Doc Fesstival issued an autopsy, identifying him as vigilante gunman Crazy Carl Williams!

Day 3
The townspeople rallied together for an insta!

Supershroom cackled to himself as he worked on his next bomb in the back of the sheriff's office that the gangsters had taken over. They were so close to having the town for themselves, even if it meant selling out to a mysterious man from the future. Suddenly, half the town broke into his office, accusing him of having covered up King of Eterity's death to confuse the town. Supershroom denied everything, hiding the bomb behind the desk, but it wasn't enough, and he was shot.
Supershroom has died!
The office of Doc Fesstival issued an autopsy, identifying him as gangster and explosives expert Black Bill Redford!

Night 4
RSuperTheGreat, the local blacksmith, was sleeping in her bed when someone dropped an anvil on her.
RSuperTheGreat has died!
The office of Doc Fesstival issued an autopsy, identifying her as townsperson Timmy Claymore!

Ness-Wednesday was smoking one of his custom-rolled cigars, but it seemed that someone had poisoned it.
Ness-Wednesday has died!
The office of Doc Fesstival issued an autopsy, identifying him as townsperson The Texan Smoker!

Day 4
Waddle Derp had been shifty-eyed all night. He and Supershroom had been in this business for years - how could anyone have found them out? He was furious at his old partner TNT Tyrone now more than ever - that traitor! Thankfully he had tricked that wannabe gunslinger glitch4 into taking him out -- or had he? Waddle Derp wasn't any more sure than the others about that; Supershroom's bombs always did the trick, after all. Waddle Derp had poisoned Ness-Wednesday, too - not his usual forte, being the fastest gun in the west and all, but he felt an ironic death was necessary when the townspeople were so infuriatingly close to taking him down. Unfortunately, he was in such a panic when the townspeople came to interrogate him that he had no defense - and the fastest gun in the west was no more.
Waddle Derp has died!
The office of Doc Fesstival issued an autopsy, identifying him as notorious gangster Jonny "The Fastest Gun in the West" Peterson!

Night 5
Nanaya Jacob was a hardworking work horse brought west by the first settlers of Gunshot Gulch. His business was sitting on people, and though he had never saved anyone, he had done his best. Tonight, as he sat and hoped the gangsters wouldn't find the one he was sitting on, he found the gangsters coming for him - the one thing he dreaded more than anything.
Nanaya Jacob has died!
The office of Doc Fesstival issued an autopsy, identifying him as the One Horse in town!

Day 5
Sanct had bone-chilling plans for what remained of the town. As an undead gangster, he was committed to the spreading of death across the world - and working with TheDinoKing, oil tycoon from the future, was his latest venture. With the deaths of their close allies Supershroom and Waddle Derp, the two criminals realized they were doomed - and they walked into the town square, dejected, to meet the townspeople. Zeldamaster12, the old country doctor, was packing a pistol and he shot Sanct, shattering his bones.
Sanct has died!

Zeldamaster issued an autopsy right there, identifying him as undead gangster Mr. Skull!
TheDinoKing was next. He demanded that the town listen to him, and let him defend himself, but they were having none of it. Finally, he shouted out in a rage that even though he hadn't succeeded, it wasn't over, and he would do anything to survive. He activated a portable time machine and created a gateway back to the future, intending to complete his plans in another time, another place. Before that could happen, though, Megar and thehelmetguy, the local general store owner and bartender, both shot at the gateway as TheDinoKing stepped through, closing it and slicing him in half.
TheDinoKing has died!
Zeldamaster issued another autopsy, identifying him as Big Doyle, oil tycoon from the year 2180!

Zeldamaster12, thehelmetguy1, and Megar went on to win a Nobel Peace Prize as well as a Daytime Emmy for their work in the sitcom "Megar in the Middle".

Sanct went on to reform over 100 years later, changing his name to Bloodedge and joining a band of ghost pirates.
THE TOWN WINS!

Congratulations to Megar, Zeldamaster12, and thehelmetguy1, who managed a major comeback strating on Day 3 when it seemed that all was lost!

And thanks to everyone else for playing and being active as well! See you next game...

Final phase change

My personal thoughts
Biggest comeback in SMBX Mafia history? Maybe. The town was extremely close to being wiped out on Day 3 when the gangsters almost managed to lynch Zeldamaster. Both the townspeople, especially the main two active townspeople, Megar and Zeldamaster, and the mafia played extremely well this game, and there were a lot of exciting moments. Balance-wise, I think this game could've been significantly better. The roleflip mechanic kind-of broke the game for the town later on in the same way that witchking predicted it would during host sign-ups, so I apologize about that. Doc Fesstival's retiring mechanic was stupid - I should've had it also reveal his identity to the whole game, which would've given it utility even if it wasn't that great. I thought the mafia was too powerful in the early game until the town started to make a comeback, Jonny in particular, and they may have been, especially if the prospector had been alive longer to assist them in killing townspeople. I do think this game turned out pretty well though, and look forward to more Mafia games in the future!

Player Analysis
Spoiler: show
King of Eterity: TNT Tyrone. Was fairly silent for the first few phases and then voted to lynch thehelmetguy without any precedent, who was later more or less confirmed to be a good guy, so it's easy to see why Supershroom was believed by the central townspeople to be Tyrone over Eterity. You did a pretty good job of defending yourself given what you had, but your misunderstanding of blue alliances was probably ultimately your downfall. Hope to see you again, with this experience in mind (and being a miller is tough)!

Supershroom: Black Bill Redford. Mafia MVP for sure. He came up with most of the strategy for his team and probably would not have been discovered had King of Eterity not been killed. Even on the following day, he almost managed to weasel his way out of being lynched, and probably would have succeeded had Zeldamaster not reveal himself as Doc Fesstival. He also made effective use of his ability at the time of Eterity's death, and provided high quality deception to the town in the form of a suspicion list.

witchking666: Barney the Carnie. Didn't do that much, understandably as a townsperson who only lived to see a single day phase. Was also the meta MVP for pointing out most of this game's issues in advance even though others didn't agree with him (including myself).

ShadowStarX: Sheriff Westin. Died early in the game, before revealing to anyone (he did technically reveal to Megar on Night 2 but it didn't matter since the autopsy revealed his identity at the same time). Was decently active before dying, would have liked to see more from him and his role later on in the game. Hope to see you again!

Zeldamaster12: Doc Fesstival. Was one of the central townspeople in this game alongside Megar, and was a big part of leading the town to victory in the later phases. Revealing yourself on Day 3 was a pretty clutch move that saved the town from what otherwise would've been certain doom.

MECHDRAGON777: Time Cop. Died on Night 2 at the same time as ShadowStarX, only having inspected witchking. He was about to discover Zeldamaster12 as Doc Fesstival, the one role in the game that could be absolutely confirmed by color, so if he hadn't died the town probably would've assembled itself much faster. Good showing.

Ness-Wednesday: The Texan Smoker. Was a lot more active and useful than he was in some previous games, and contributed to key lynches for the town. Hope to see more of you in the future!

Megar: Vinny, the general store owner. The town MVP, and MVP of the whole game. He was the leader of the alliance and an extremely competent leader of the town who lied to other townspeople in order to do what needed to be done, and rightfully keep any suspicion off of him. He did a really good job of staying alive by making everyone assume the horse was protecting him, even when he wasn't. And... nice comeback.

PixelPest: Frank Strange. rip night 1

thehelmetguy1: Eric the Bartender. Sufficiently active as a player and able to defend himself well enough to get out of being lynched when accused, he was a fairly important townsperson even though he never actually joined the alliance. He contributed a lot to early game strategy and was super active. Thanks for participating!

Danny: Lester the Kid. gotta give you a chance

Nanaya Jacob: One Horse. Did not do that well as the doctor-like role, frankly, failing to ever protect anyone, but his mere presence throughout almost the whole game is probably thanks to his mere presence. Bit of a trade-off in that sense, since it just led to the mafia killing other players, but players who were less involved in the town's strategy. Still, you acted pretty suspicious and refused to work with the town as you often do, which I'd be more careful about.

Sanct: Mr. Skull. Valuable mafia member who contributed effectively to the mafia's strategy even though his ability was underpowered. He did a good job of keeping any strong suspicion off of him until the end of the game.

glitch4: Crazy Carl Williams. Only killed townspeople; he probably only killed PixelPest on night 1 because he thought he had to use his ability, which I should've been more clear about. Still, be careful - killing townspeople is bad. You were otherwise fairly inactive as well - I encourage you to participate more!

Waddle Derp: Jonny Peterson. Although his ability was critical to the mafia's success for most of the game, he didn't contribute to strategy all that much, nor post in the thread or on Discord much. Still, he did what he needed to do for his team, and stayed hidden until close to the end.

Doesntpostverymuch: The Prospector. Did a poor job of defending himself as the third party and probably could've gotten what was essentially a random safety vote by Supershroom off of him if he had not panicked and essentially given himself away as a bad guy. Trying to team up with the town is also a very bad strategy as an independent role, since they will always outnumber you and be able to lynch you as they please. In the future, I encourage you to not give up, and try to come up with something to defend yourself and deflect suspicion.

RSuperTheGreat: Timmy Claymore. Didn't say all that much throughout the game; I encourage you to post more. Hope to see more of you in future games!

TheDinoKing: Big Doyle. Died last, appropriately enough for the in-lore leader of the mafia in this game. You did a pretty good job of hiding until the very end, and convincingly contributed to mid-game strategizing. Unfortunately, your alibi was pretty easy to see through by the end given helmetguy's early claims. Nice to see you back in Mafia, in any case.

i won a nobel prize and a daytime emmy
Megar in the Middle
I admit that I laughed a bit
Now, out of the three games I played, this was definetly my best performance by far. In M35 I stopped a bandwagon that was gonna lynch the TP to start one that lynched a blue.
And M36... I did a terrible performance

I feel like I deserve some sort of medal for being the MVP of this game.

Well, I don't expect much from myself in the analysis as I basically decided to fucking die fucking night 2 fuck fuck fuck. On top of this I also played as a vanilla townie. But even after my death this game remained interesting to follow and think about. I think Megar deserves MVP here. Where he made some questionable decisions last game due to being rusty he played like a fucking king this game. And basically acted as a blue while being a regular townie. Also, this game didn't have as many inactives as the previous one. There were some, but we are improving at least.

Player Analysis

It's really obvious? Just minutes after the claim you already confessed as TP. Then there was no need for her to counterclaim you, no matter if she noticed it or not.

Also Pseudo, my downfall obviously was already clear when I had to claim to Mega. I could just luckily guess for which of the unclaimed role would be a player you could accuse, and if I had met e.g. ZM or Ness-Wednesday being the true Miller, I would have probably died Night 3 already since they really never had any suspicion on them.

Gotta tell the truth. I almost panicked when Shroom put me as most suspicious. However, if there is one thing I learned from M36, it is to never look desperate upon being suspected. So I calmed down and thought in how I could defend myself. And I managed to escape from suspicion like this.

And about the game: Heck, that was quite the comeback there, and a close one too. One wrong lynch and the town was done for.
