How to add a custom tileset?

Postby PixelShroom » Sat Feb 11, 2017 1:36 pm

I would like to add a custom tileset to Super Mario Bros X, but I don't want to replace it with an already existing tileset and make it accessible only in the level that I'm making, but I want to add it as a new tileset that I could use anytime in the level editor for any level without having to add it to a folder with the same name as the level every time I make a level. Is there any way that I can do this?

Your question can be interpreted two different ways, and I'll try to answer both as fully as possible.

Case 1: You want to add a custom tileset without replacing an already existing tileset. If that was your question, this is possible in SMBX 2.0. There are extra blocks you can replace in order to suit your needs. These are limited, however, and you might find yourself having to replace other blocks if your tileset is too big.

Case 2: You want to add a custom tileset shared throughout the entirety of an episode/project that you're making and don't want to put it in every single level folder. If this is the case you can simply paste the tileset in your episode/project folder, which is the same as where all of your levels will be located. Since their location is the same all levels will have access to whatever graphics you put in there. Keep in mind that if you do this you shouldn't attempt to paste the same files inside level folders

I mainly wanted to add it as another tileset in the level editor for quick access and convenience, but also so I don't have to replace the tileset, in case I might use the old one. For now I'll stick with SMBX 1 and I might start using SMBX 2 when it's not beta anymore, but the second case might be useful if I get better at making levels and maps and start making a whole map. Also, thx for the detailed answer :)

I'm aware you're using 1.3.0.x, but as a heads up you can create custom tileset files in 2.0. These files are basically re-arrangements of blocks/BGOs/NPCs/etc for quick access. You can either make them or copy-paste an existing tileset file into your level/episode folder.
