I still like doing it the old fashioned way. Using both the normal pic and the mask. It's pretty easy and quick for me to make masks, so...
Plus, even with future PNG graphics, everyone will still have the ability to turn them into GIFs, along with the masks.
Yes, but .gifs are still impractical as they don't support transparency. It's also an objective truth that .pngs are easier to make than .gifs so I don't know what you are talking about there.

From all this, it just strengthens the opinion I've had for years that people that use Lunalua and are trying to push others to use it are pretty stuck up about it. Not once has anyone in this thread given legitimate reasons as to why the graphic should stay a .png, instead all I've gotten out of it was "hurr durr switch to Lunalua".

If you're someone who uses SMBX as infrequently as I do, then Lunalua shouldn't be necessary at all just to get custom graphics, that's incredibly ridiculous. I've been weaning off of SMBX for the longest time because it seems like more recently, if you don't use Lunalua in your level/episode, you are the biggest sinner.

I already gave reasons. .png take less space, support transparency, makes it easier to make/find graphics, and overall have more support. I already said that you can download LunaLua because it has important bug-fixes, and allows you to play more levels. You don't really have to install it, as it is more "just extract this". This replaces 1.3.0.1. and you don't have to learn how to code. You make levels just like in 1.3.0.1. Besides, you haven't really given any reason to stay with 1.3.0.1. It's like I said "I'm going to use smbx 1.0 because 'reasons'".

support transparency,
Fun fact, so do the .gifs, but you need to put the transparency over the mask. This is still not a big issue, because how many graphics have you actually come across that utilize transparency?

Not really?

If the bug-fixes were so important, how come they weren't packaged into an SMBX 1.3.0.2? Clearly it's something people can live without.

How so? Most of the levels sitting in the Levels forum are levels I've been able to play without Lunalua.

Actually, I have given a reason, though not directly to you.

1. While still marginally small, keep in mind we're comparing 1 png against 2 gifs.
2. The .gif transparency is weird. It's some weird transparency that's kind of like additive but not really? LunaLua actually makes it less glitchy, but that's beside the point. PNG sprites have proper transparency.
3. "Have more support" becomes a topic when talking about drawing graphics with lua. Unless you make the background of your gif transparent, you're not able to just take it and load it into lua for shenanigans such as a zoom effect or motion blur. It's very niche, but I think that's where Yoshi021 was getting at.
4. 1.3.0.2 IS Lua-SMBX. In fact, if you go to this page, you can download a whole copy of 1.3.0.2 with all the neat bug fixes and lua! 1.3.0.1 is LunaDLL SMBX and back then the fixes didn't exist yet. Fixes include stuff like the mushroom in lava bug, veggie in lava bug and the aforementioned adjustment to gif transparency to be less glitchy.
5.That's because LunaLua hasn't caught on until around the time CC12 hit. People don't release a lot of levels outside of contests. Some examples for lua levels include The Forgotten Passage, Rinkas;Heaven, half of these levels, Rinkas;Conquest, Spinjump On Everything, Endways Sensed 777 and Rinkas;Hell.

I personally don't see why this big of a fuss is being made over this. Especially considering there have been like 5 or more episodes which use lunalua since October of last year (Halloween Hypnosis, Maglx2, Winter Redemption, Mix World 2, Sinem Mayhem) which have been played by a lot of people, you'd think it wouldn't be that big of a deal. NOT TO MENTION I released sprites which required LunaLua just because I was lazy half a year ago and nobody got mad. The reasoning "oh that was in a pack, this is a single sprite", doesn't really make much sense to me, since running a single sprite through the PGE PNG-->GIF tool is easier than running 8 tilesets through them.

1. SMBX 1.3.0.2 isn't outdated, lua isn't even official(made by Redigit).
2. He doesn't fail to understand common logic. He makes excellent points, unlike you. You're ignorant, rude and think you're always right.
3. He's not forcing anyone to use anything, he's just commenting on the fact that no one would install lua for a mere coin that isn't even made that well(no offense to the creator)
4. How come his reasons are not valid? So far he came up with the best arguments and I'd say his reasons are pretty fucking valid.

Ah, I see how it is then. You're only strengthening my opinion:

I'm not being stubborn on using SMBX 1.3.0.1, I'm just not going to switch to using Lunalua with the amount times I use SMBX, it's just unnecessary, but if you want to force Lunalua onto me (which renders your complaints about me completely null), go ahead. I'm pretty sure I don't fail at understanding common logic, but if you want to think that, go ahead, I'm just not sure what "common logic" I'm misunderstood so far. I'm also not forcing people to use "outdated stuff", I'm just giving extreme suggestions that making this single graphic require Lunalua is kind of ridiculous, and everyone seems to be looking past that just to ram Lunalua down our throats, over and over again.

One thing I will not agree with is that the reasons I gave you that were supposedly attempts to counter your arguments are invalid. The only reason why you see them as invalid is because they don't apply to your standards and viewpoints. I stood my ground and gave you reasons to the question you asked, which I will repeat for you.

But, instead of seeing my responses as my opinion and respecting my, you decide to turn it all down and call the reasons invalid. Sorry to upset you in this way, I guess.

Thank you for giving a legitimate reply, Enjl. I'm not going to bother filling up a post with responses. Just know that I do have Lunalua, but the entire debacle was about a single sprite requiring Lunalua, which I still feel is extremely ridiculous and extremely lazy, but that's just my opinion. I wasn't expecting it to erupt into a giant argument about shunning people who don't use/want to use Lunalua just because I asked a simple question.

Well said. I even bothered to download paint.net do make a custom coin myself just to prove that it isn't that hard to make a mask for a sprite that doesn't require lunalua. All you do is save the graphic, then open it, then paint all the non-visible parts white and the visible parts black, and save it as "sprite_01m".

Honestly I'd download the coins but when I saw "lunalua required" I immediately clicked off, because 1. I don't use lua and 2. I'm not gonna download it for a single sprite. Again, if it was a pack full of sprites then I'd consider it.

I do agree that it is lazy and that it wouldn't have been much effort to add a gif variant, but yeah this has gotten way out of hand for all the wrong reasons some people in this thread should calm down.
If anyone wants them as .gif (please tell me if this lets you download the files. It's my first attempt at using drive to upload stuff.) (I also really wonder why nobody bothered to do this while this discussion was going on)

Finally, the argument storm is over.
Anyway, the graphic is good for a starter, but is a little flat. Try decorating the graphic with a symbol.
Edit: Please take this argument somewhere else. this isn't the place for it.
