custom Kirby 1-up

Postby MrSpoon » Sat Jun 04, 2016 11:40 am

This is my first custom graphic that is being uploaded. I am no artist, but I want to be! :(

Copy 3 files! Insult me all you want, I don't care, even I think it's awful!

Eww, I don't like it either. First off, there's 1x1 on some parts of the image, which doesn't look nice, and the text appears to be a little off. But every good graphics designer has to start somewhere!

Before I get into feedback I want to tell you that there's no need for you to be saying this.
There's a difference between insulting you, insulting the sprite and posting an opinion on the sprite. I don't think anyone should insult you for some random sprite you made, especially when you're a beginner.

Thinking it's awful and wanting to improve isn't even a bad thing, but it shouldn't justify turning away from any sort of feedback, even if it ends up being harsh and along the lines of: "UGh how can this dork not know what 1x1 PIXELs IS!!!"

To start you off, I posted a tutorial on the basics of pixel art. You can read through it here. If you're lost or don't understand parts of it, don't hesitate to reply in the topic.

As for the sprite itself I can give you some feedback which should help you out once you got a hand of the basics of lineart and shapes:
-the pink colours are very close to one another. Having a bit more contrast wouldn't hurt
-the lines are sluggishly drawn. What software are you using? Most drawing tools provide you with the option to add more layers so you can work on different parts of your sprite without having to re-draw what's behind it all the time. For this sprite putting the 1-UP on a new layer and refining its shape would've helped make it look better.
-don't hesitate to flip half the kirby sprite horizontally to make it symmetrical

Your sprite surely needs improvement, especially because of the 1x1 pixels, but that's because SMBX wants the graphics to have doubled size, so I can understand that a beginner with this sort of things might have problems.
As for the general drawing, I think the pink on Kirby's body is too bright, even though he used a similar colour even in some official games, so this might be a nitpick. The colour of his shoes, instead, is pretty bright, and too similar to the body, so much that I might have an hard time recognizing the shoes if it wasn't for the text. Another thing is how the text itself is written. I'm not criticizing your writing, especially because mine is pretty terrible, but letters in pixelart are pretty different than hand written letters. The "P" in the word "UP" isn't very nice to look at, and if it wasn't for the title of the topic I might have mistaken it for a lowercase R.
Going on, the sprite isn't symmetrical, and you can easily notice how the left part is larger than the right one by a long shot. You can fix this by just copying the left part and rotating it if the sprite is facing forward, which is the case here.
It lacks shading, which makes it look kind of simple. The lack of shading isn't always a bad thing, but I suggest you to learn how to shade.
The last thing I have to point out is how the sprite isn't rounded. The upper edges of the main body are too squared. I had the same problem when I started, everytime I tried to do something round, it looked too blocky. You might want to practice simple curved lines to solve this little problem, at least it kinda worked for me.

Take in mind that this isn't an insult to you, but just a list of feedbacks I put togheter to help you improve.

I see my thing a little clearer. It's my first one, I'll improve. I promise! I am using Paint.net and using a picture as a guide. The P does look like a lowercase R, I would admit, but that's only because of the circle of the P. I'll improve, I know I will. I already have plans to make Copy Essences' pedestal, and including Ice (ice flower), Fire (fire flower), and Parasol. (super leaf) I have a quick question for both of you: after making the Copy Essences, should I start to replace Link with Sword Kirby, or should I make Mario enemies into Kirby enemies? (I'm thinking of making Bill Blasters to Shotzos, Boos to Scarfys, and Volcano Lotuses to Waddle Doos) I really do appreciate you guys at least commentating, I need all the feedback as possible!

After the Copy Essences, I suggest you to attempt whatever NPC you feel more comfortable in replacing, or the simpler ones in terms of design, such as Scarfys. If you want to attempt Sword Kirby first, maybe because it feels easier to you, I suggest you to make a normal Kirby friendly NPC (Or just as a normal sprite, without using it in game) to get the hang of the character.

You could do a little better with the cropping. Since you took those sprites fron Super Star, you could try and get them nice and clean from a sheet, also, I think the ability pedestal is too stretched.
I think we are going a little bit off-topic, though.

I did get them from a sprite sheet, and we ARE going off topic. We might as well stop. Well, first try!
