Art Styles?

Postby WindyDelcarlo » Wed Apr 23, 2014 6:33 pm

Is there a guide of some sort explaining the difference between SMW and SMB3 tiles? It's clear there's a difference in the art styles, but how do I go about making my new blocks fit in a specific style?

The only way I know is understanding the difference in shading. Try looking at a few graphics from different games and try to find the different shading techniques. For example: SMB3 accomplishes realistic shading by using, well, realistic colours. The shading on SMB3 tiles is often smooth and the light source is easily found. SMW tiles use less shading, bright and happy colours and less colours. White's often used as the lightest variant of any colour here. SMW creates a cartoon-ish style.

Although it is true what Emral is saying about the difference in shading, there is also a difference in the pallets as well, as I have found the the SMW graphics have a much darker shading in the colors used then the SMB3 pallets which use a more "whiter" color in the spriting. Also, SMB3 graphics have a lot more detail in the tiles then SMW's which is a lot more simpler so the bold colors stick out more as a result.

It's easy to distinguish the difference between SMB3 and SMW styles. If you made a level with a SMW tileset with SMB3 background objects, you notice that the SMW palette has a much more simplistic shading; on the contrary, SMB3 shading is much more professional looking, with better looking colors. Anyway, even though clash is a misused term, I think that SMB3 and SMW look hideous together, as they're two totally different styles; Emral pointed out that SMW is like a cartoon, which is indeed true.

I will criticize SMB3 and SMW mixed, so take note of that if that statement has anything to do with this thread.

I'm looking to making custom graphics in these styles, not using them. I like some of the SMB3 and SMW tiles together, which is a point of clash focusing on the blocks themselves, not the games they're from.

Examine the shading on the blocks and recreate it on the new blocks.
