The Abandoned Castle

Postby Princess Peach » Sun Nov 01, 2015 6:36 pm

Here's another old level of mine, from the same old episode as my "Switch Bridge" Level. ( http://www.smbxgame.com/forums/v ... 32&t=12036 )
It actually is the level right before The Switch Bridge, and it is fairly straightforward, and its not very long, because it is a fairly early level in the episode. I thought the "Abandoned Castle" idea was kinda cool though. haha

Oh boy, my first review.
My first impressions by the screenshots aren't very nice. Why are the "windows" like that? If they're supposed to be broken windows, it looks unappealing. I'm not really impressed from the level itself, either. I like the concept that you've chosen, but you didn't create it well. The level is pretty flat and pretty bland. You should place some more BGOs, but don't use the SMB3 columns, because this will happen. Not sure why it happens, but I think it happens because some backgrounds appear in front of others, I'm not sure. with some other BGOs as well, so always test your level just in case.
Another thing I didn't like is that the whoooole level is just about stomping enemies. You can also easily fly over most of the obstacles because of the Tanooki Suit at the start. Make the level more fun and unique, try adding more obstacles, not just enemies. At the outside section, there's a blind jump at the end of the platform trail. A line of coins would've been nice to indicate you have to stay on the platform, or just don't make the platform fall at all. Thankfully I avoided death thanks to the Tanooki Suit, but some people might fall for that. The third section was as boring as the first one. The enemies are pretty repetitive, another column cut-off. Overall, the level isn't very good and it needs a lot of editing before it's worth playing.

This is a pretty old level so I'm not surprised that it kinda sucks. Haha but I did go through and make edits before submitting it, I tried putting a bunch of bgos (which explains the scattered pillar pieces) like hanging lights and all that, and the level looked pretty good. Only when I tested it is when it messed up. So I tried to remove all the bgos. But the thing about the lack of variety in the enemies, and putting more hazards, I'll consider that, I know I should've put more hazards. Haha

The Abandoned Castle review

Design & Gameplay: Bad
- This level wasn't fun... at all. It was kind of repetitive and it had bad design in general. The powerup at the start is a tanooki suit, which is one of the rather strong weapons. (I'd recommend you to have super leaves, fire flowers and ice flowers as main powerups in world 2, and no tanooki or hammer suits there at all, not even as secrets) The NPC placement is bad too, sometimes it's sparse, but sometimes it's spammy. In conclusion, this level barely had any fun factor.

Atmosphere & Visuals: Very Bad
- The atmosphere of the level was even worse than the gameplay. There were so many cutoffs, that I couldn't even count, and the graphics also clashed at several points. The music wasn't too fitting in the inside sections, but it was really unfitting in the outside section. There are also some random SMB3 pillars floating around in section 3.

Score: 2.25/10
This level is unfun, bland and ugly, but I wouldn't say it's terrible or painful...
But still, moved to 'Trash Can'
