The Rise of Bowser (episode)

Postby TabletPillowLamp » Mon Jul 27, 2015 5:22 pm

Hi, just wanted to share a short episode I made on Super Mario Bros X.
This episode:
-plays like a traditional Mario world game, so Mario and Luigi are the only playable characters.
-has 7 interesting and challenging worlds.
-allows players to choose the order of some worlds.
-has a lot of secrets.

Notes:
-This episode can get really freaking difficult. I wouldn't recommend it to beginners. But hey, you should give it a shot anyways even if you're not good.
-This isn't just your ordinary linear episode. There are a lot of secrets in here. If you need help, please reply to me in this topic so that I can help you.

Credits:
Spoiler: show
Graphics:
Valtteri's Graphics Pack 1.0.1 (Graphics pack)
SupahKupah (Wrath of Bowser Episode)
goombaguy (SML returns Episode)
Synthescissor (Some of the music)

Custom Music:
All the custom music comes from these games below. Some are remixed, most of them are ripped:
-Yoshi's Island- SMW2
-Super Mario land 2
-Mario and Luigi Partners in Time
-Mario Party DS
-Castlevania- Portrait of Ruin
-Mario Hoops 3-on-3
-Megamari
-Megaman 9
-Megaman 10
-Super Paper Mario
-No More Heros 2
-New Super Mario Bros Wii
-Gunman Clive 2
-Legend of Zelda Phantom Hourglass
-Super Mario Bros 3
-Pokemon Omega-Ruby Alpha-Sapphire

So there's clash in some of the screenies. First one looks boring, second one looks interesting but the pipe clashes. Third and fifth look boring. Fourth and fifth, however, look very interesting. I'd say based on teh screenies 7/10, and once I play it I'll review it.

Looks great but the gameplay is unfair so 5/10.

Thanks for the feedback, but I want you to be specific. What parts are unfair? Please tell me so that I can fix it.

It seems that I'm not getting enough replies back. Sorry if I'm a bother, but I need more specific reviews on this episode. I want to fix the errors so that my episode would be good. Any feedback on specific parts would work great. A video would be even better! But as long as it helps me become a better level designer, I'm fine with it. :)

I played about two worlds worth of this game. Here are my thoughts:

- You're really good at level design; exploring the stages is great. This is definitely the high point of the game.
- Giving out two lives at once as a reward for finding a slightly hidden spot is way too big of a reward, even though extra lives are mostly useless in SMBX. Other times, you have spots that are more work to get to but only have a dino coin...
- There are some typos in some early dialogue
- The dialogue is pretty dumb and juvenile
- I don't think anyone needs a tutorial on things that were in the Super Mario World instruction manual, like P-switches and leaf powerups, but I guess there's nothing wrong with including them. I just find it funny that later when legitimately new stuff like the ice-yoshi shows up, you don't explain it.
- Some of the custom enemy graphics are very weird, they don't look like Mario enemies. Why does the Mushroom Kingdom have zombies? The tiny rabbits don't even look like enemies, they look like friendly background critters.
- I'm not convinced the SMW2 Yoshi graphic works better than the normal one, it seems like Yoshi is facing a different direction than Mario
- I repeated the autoscroller stage in World 1 five times to reach the hidden exit, and when I finally got it, it just led the same place as the stage's normal exit. Lame.
- The snakes in the desert levels spit out cannonballs. But Mario can't jump on them. Mario's supposed to be able to jump on cannonballs, he can do so in SMB3 and you're using the same cannonball graphic here, so it's very misleading and inconsistent. Change it to a fireball or something.
- The white pipes in Polar Paradise 1 (and probably other levels) have a gray outline that doesn't match the other graphics.
- Halfway through each of the Koopa Kids boss battles you have them say some dialogue and then appear somewhere else. But during the dialogue, there are two copies of the koopa kid on the screen. You should add like a 3-5 second delay before the second version of the koopa kid appears, so the dialogue can happen, the kid can fly into the sky, and then he can appear somewhere else. But if you do that, you should also add some kind of visual indicator of where and when he's about to appear, like lightning striking that spot, or the boss appearing at the top of the screen and falling from the ceiling. Otherwise Mario could be standing there just as he appears.
- You accidentally included two save files with the download.
- Seems like this game is not about the rise of Bowser at all, unless there's a huge plot twist later. I would've been interested to play a plot-heavy Mario game that was about Bowser's origin story and how he originally rose to power. Consider changing the game's title to something else; I felt misled.

Oh wow. Thanks a lot for replying! Yeah... I'm not that good at naming titles. The story isn't big in this episode. But I will take note on your suggestions. Feel free to add any more thoughts when you get further into the game!

This is my favourite episode. Thanks for sharing. I do not much about technical part but it was awesome experience playing this game. I played it with my partner. There are many games available on internet, but I found this one more interesting.

Judging for the screens, looks pretty good, especially the ghost house ones. I will play this later.

what
no
there is no clashing at the screens
clash doesn't matter unless you're pairing sonic with metroid or something

You need to play the episode.
That's clear and I've only said what THE SCREENS look like.Of course, it can be better in the episode.
Edit: Now I've tried it and the first level looks and plays good but when I want to enter the second level (MK2), I get a runtime error 10, type missmatch.
