Postby Flamehawk33 » Sat Dec 05, 2015 5:17 pm

Just a simple little level I made in less than a day.

PLEASE give feedback, positive or negative, it would really help!

I hope you guys enjoy it, even if it is a bit short.

Thanks!

Review from lighthouse64...

Overall score: 1.3

Gameplay: 0.1

+it was ok with jumping over lava, and npcs
-It was repetative jumping over the lava monsters from the skulls again and again...
-Very easy to jump across everything, which made it boring
-I'd have to say this is pretty much a just jump over the pit level...
-The dry bones and spinies posed no threat.
-All I had to do was speed jump to get over the platforms.
-It was extremely short... I didn't think short meant 30 seconds of gameplay

graphics and music: 2.5
+All the npcs and blocks fitted together well. (overworld and underworld)
+the cave bg was fine.
+the music fit well
-the black backgrounds over the pits clashed.
-The cave blocks touching the lava should've been shaded so it looked like the lava faded out instead of it suddenly touching the block.
-no backgrounds underground  (there were 2 bgs aboveground)
-The ceiling looked boring... You could've added some stalacite looking graphics (maybe from a gfx pack, or the upside down slanted blocks)

The trash can.

Official Review of Lava Cave

Design and Gameplay (weighed 85%): 1.5/10
This level was really short and lacked NPC variation. It was almost always skull rafts and Blaargs with a few Dry Bones and Spinies on different rock pieces. The placement of platforms/skull rafts and pits was actually quite good though and presented the player with a small challenge, making the level a bit more fun. Two main design issues with this level include the lack of coins and the black pieces in the pits. Coins are essential to making a level and pits are perfectly well designated with a lack of blocks. This level was also quite bland with the complete and utter lack of BGOs in the cave section. In part with the falling platforms, the Blaargs aren’t really needed. Sparingly adding some Podoboos instead there, as well as throughout the level, would add a challenge and give a bit of NPC variation. Although the level was very easy, make sure you add power-ups throughout your levels, but spread them out depending on the difficulty. There wasn’t much of an atmosphere to this level. Beware of cutoff as there was some present in this level—make sure you finish groups of blocks with edge pieces, or find a graphic of a single-block-wide piece (one block wide, is finished on both sides), even when there is lava on the side.

Graphics and Music (weighed 15%): 3.7/10
These vanilla graphics were, well, vanilla graphics and this music was, well, vanilla music. It worked pretty well throughout the level, except a few points where SMB3 and SMW elements were mixed; specifically the first pipe, the lava, the power-up, and the Toad. The Toad doesn’t do too much problem-making, but the lava, the first pipe, and the mushroom should be replaced with their SMW friends, as they don’t fit the SMW style.

Overall: 1.83/10 (The Trash Can)
- very short
- needs more NPC variety, but not too much
- use only SMW elements in an SMW level, as most often the styles of SMB3 and SMW won’t work well together
- avoid cutoff and no black pieces in pits
- add coins and BGOs!
Final Note: This level could be really fun if you work on developing the atmosphere, increasing the length, adding coins and BGOs, and adding some more NPC variety.

Two more things: the name Lava Cave is generic, and, while this may just be preference, the goal post is a bit short.
EDIT: Accidentally bumped it, apologies.
