Solid Background Objects

Postby Sora655 » Sat Oct 24, 2015 2:18 pm

First off, before asking this question, I'm new here. I haven't really seen these forums before, so go easy on me.
How can you make background objects "solid", like, you can stand on them.
There was probably a topic like this some time ago, but I haven't found it, so yeah.

You have to sprite swap blocks so they look like background objects (tile by tile if necessary). Just be aware that it's unintuitive (and generally considered bad level design) to have what appear to be background objects as solid blocks, as players will expect to be able to go through them at first glance.

You can make just one block invisible, and put them on the background objects.

I tried that before, and it didn't work very well. (The invisible block appeared)

You should then open the block you want to use in Paint.NET and fill the block with pure black color and its mask with white. In case the block originally doesn't use a mask, try these tips I said with a one that uses it (block-1, block-6, etc.).

Thats one good way to do it, but if you want to make it easier on yourself, just customize a block graphic to look like the background you want to be solid. But the block would need to be the same size as the background graphic that you want to be solid..

One other thing i did when i first started using SMBX was i'd put Sizable blocks down, then place the background tiles on top of the sizable. Its a simple way of doing it, because sizable blocks dont show through most backgrounds, but only the top will be solid. (You'd still go through it but you can walk on top of it)

But my suggestion is easier. If he will follow your suggestion, he will have to customize a lot of blocks just for one BGO. With my method he only needs one block, which can be placed on any BGO.
