Maple Treeway

Postby SecondScolipede » Thu Aug 20, 2015 5:09 pm

Maple Treeway is one of my favourite Mario Kart stages, and i've always wanted to gor unning and jumping through those environments and atmospheres with Mario, so this was super fun to make.

(Note: The giant wiggler is a bit buggy.)

Bad things: The third wiggler is very hard to kill if you aren't fast enough.
Why is the first mushroom block invisible? Clever gimmick though, no points lost.
Coin placement is a bit bland.
The trees made of sizables are clever, I'll give you that, but still kinda ugly.
A lot of blind run-jumps.

Good things:
Great graphics.
Clever design overall, with good use of the leaf.
Good NPC variety.

OVERALL: A fun level with some design issues. 8/10.

I don't think recreating a Kart Racing game's courses in a 2D Platformer Engine is a good idea.

It's more based around the environments.

Yeah I can see that, because it's bland and flat and the only thing which makes it stand out among other levels are the graphics and NPC variety. It's just like the environment of tracks in a Kart Racing game.

My Review:
This level had a relatively interesting concept to take the style of a Mario Kart course and use it to make a level, but this was executed very poorly. First of all, the first power-up is hidden until you hit it. It's the first power-up for goodness sake! I found that the piranhacus giganticus in the pipes were exceptionally annoying as they don't go back into their pipes and you need to either spin jump onto them with a good deal of speed or take a hit. NPC placement seemed very random and unchallenging and the giant wigglers also didn't really work as the player floated in the air over top of them. I also didn't like the fact that you had the maple treeway styled wood (tree sizable) and then threw in some airship pieces that looked completely out of place. The worst part however was the trees themselves. The trees made of sizables looked really messy and terrible and sometimes glitched out so that the player could walk in the air right through the middle of the sizable. I would recommend using some BGOs to make the trees and then use a platform like block-168 to create the places the player can stand. There were also a few invisible blocks that just added to the poor quality of the level. The level was also very short and the last section as very linear, repetitive, clustered, and unappealing.
Overall: 2.6/10

I agree about the gigantic piranhacus, but the giant wiggler- it's as good as it can possibly be. Anyway, score right now is at 5.3, which is average.

If I were to write a review it'd be similar to Cosmik's, although I wouldn't take graphics like the Airship or the tileset into consideration, and would give the same score nontheless.

Maple Treeway review

Design & Gameplay: 2/10 (counts 70%)
This level had bad design. It's not fun to play at all, at least in my opinion. The NPC placement is bad, and the variety is a bit low too, but just a bit. This level is also really short. The player can also get stuck if he falls down from the treetop if he/she doesn't have a leaf. Also, the first powerup shouldn't be hidden. The giganticus piranhacus (the tall piranha plant) is also hard to avoid if you don't take a shell with you. The coins are also place really badly.

Atmosphere & Visuals: 3/10 (counts 30%)
The music is fitting and the gfx are very autumnish.
Aside from that, I didn't like the level's atmosphere either. There are cutoffs, especially with the treecrown gfx, and the airship tiles with the smb1 fences are out of place. The amount of BGOs is also very random in my opinion. The tree sizables are very ugly, those look like 50 years old poker cards that had a bath in acid, then a yellow paint bucket and finally a bucket of glue with orange juice in it.

Score: 2.3/10
A bad attempt of recreating a mario kart course in smbx
