What is a Level designer?

So, it may seem obvious... A level designer is someone who designs level, duh. But I want to know. How do you get in that group, what are your benefits(like locking threads), and what in general do these people do?

Those are the people who design the forums' official SMBX episodes. So far, The New Great Castle Adventure is the only such episode that's been finished, and The Invasion 3 is currently in production by the group as well (which is a lot bigger than it was for the former project). They're not accepting applications any more. They also don't have any special forum permissions, aside from access to their development forum.
