Really? But why? Is it because of the airship and tank levels?

Those levels existed in the invasion 1 already. The Invasion was just a edited version of the first one showing off slopes and custom gfx.

Anime, anime and more anime. I've watched some really great anime over the 3 years that I haven't been playing SMBX. I also used to be into wargaming but I don't really have the space so I have a few 100s worth of figures in my cupboard.

I didn't like the Invasion 2 because...the gameplay was very annoying to me. Like I feel like some parts were designed to be annoying on purpose...and yes. that includes the airship and tank levels. And the Pwnhammer levels. It's not a bad episode, I just didn't like it.

On the other hand...

STTB2 IS BAE.

Great Castle Adventure is overrated and I don't understand why. I played it but it just seemed bland to me

The main reason as of why this is the case is that this is the first SMBX Episode ever that features SM64 styled gameplay like collecting stars in order to advance further on into the game and it has great challenges. At least for me. Here's my full playthrough of that game:
