did you #define INFINITY? if not you'll get an error. also, you should consider keeping a constant declaration of MyDesktop as opposed to redeclaring it every time.

The problem with making it static is what if you have multiple desktops? How are you going to define which one? Are you always updating the same one? That can't be good if you want to improve your code later.

Oh wait, you aren't even returning MyDesktop!

..you don't need to return MyDesktop. making it static just means you can access the method throughout any class. if you have multiple desktops, add an argument as to which desktop and reference that instead.
