Floating Blocks in the Sky (Sky level!)

Postby LocoTony » Fri Jul 24, 2015 5:45 pm

I'm terrible with names sorry.

2 secret areas lots of coins. basic bitch assets. and hardcore words!

if anyone reviews this please give this level a decent name if you can. A level without a name is like a conspiracy with no truth!
Shoutouts to HealthyMario for the name

UPDATE: I patched a lil exploit and I expanded the other half of the level just a smidge. (also toad is less rude)

Review of Floating Blocks in the Sky by LocoTony

This level has some bad design. It starts in the sky section, with many block sizeables. For the first section, it was empty in the most of the screens, because the lack of background objects, etc. The NPC placement was also bad. The riding part was boring. I don't think the smiley face made out of coins is sorta good. The music fits okay. There's 2 bonus sections, so why not check them out. The first bonus section is:

Great! There's some strong language here when you talk to the Thwomp and cutoffs! Isn't that nice? Well, moving forward, there's a blue Kuribo shoe, with that, you have to survive bullet bills, some grinders and banzai bills to finish the section and get 6 1-ups. There's some issue - the player can fly over the spikes in offscreen, but you can't skip the section, or even worse, cannot go back, so that not good. I don't think this useless shortcut is necessary, since it takes more time and it leads to the midpoint and the music didn't fit much. xp

The second bonus section is weird. When you enter the pipe, where the water comes out, it's an airship section, with some random song added. There's this cutoff here, some coins, and some NPCs. Though I have no idea what's the point of this section.

What I didn't show is the other cutoffs in the first section:

Overall, the level's boring and the design is bad, the cutoffs affect the score very 'strongly', and the other cons. So, um...

2.85/10

I first want to say thanks, and I really apprecaite this review. It really helped point out some flaws. I personally didn't know cut off was a major issue, I didn't really notice anything off about the brown fence especially thanks for that. I also didn't realize that you could skip the entire challenge of secret area 1 lol.

questions!

was the npc placement unfair or just really easy to deal with it?

how can one add background objects to floating platforms in the sky? When i was making the level I didn't think bgo's would work well in the sky. how would you have done it would? custom graphics pack?

how do you think the riding part could be improved?

Now I think I should explain the secret areas, secret area 1 was suppose to be a bit of middle finger and have some commitment to it. You're right on the warps I should have put a way out as well. I thought the music fit well, maybe it was the pace? the blue shoe doesn't go fast which kinda doesn't mesh well with the hectic rayman music. (I don't apoligize for rude thwomp lel)

secret area 2:it was suppose to be going inside the ship with it draining water out through the pipe, Maybe I should have had the boom boom mention that to make it more obvious. the point of it is the same point as any other secret area in mario: free coins and maybe a powerup.
once again thanks for the critique, I really hope these aren't an assload of questions.

I thought that Thwomps knew strong language only because they're mean.
So much for a "freaky block face who was born from a volcano".....

I know how bad this level is with all of the cutoff, bullet bill overload, language, etc. but I did actually enjoy the gameplay after the checkpoint, with the moving platform that you had to more or less chase as it moved between tracks and enjoyed trying to grab all of the coins and catch back up to the platform again.
