Topic Continuation Threads

Postby aero » Mon Aug 10, 2015 6:59 pm

First off, this thread is not about archiving topics. Direct any concerns about that to Joey or another admin.

This topic is about the threads that are created immediately after the archiving of a thread. Lately I've felt people are just shitposting as threads get into the 90 page range, so that they can make a topic with an oh so witty pun. Another problem is that archival has become the causation of new threads to be made, rather than interest. For instance if we had better users who didn't automatically make a new thread for screenshots or something, would we get to the amount of threads we currently have for it? I use screenshots as an example because there's so many threads for it, but for any thread I think people should ask themselves if it's really worth recreating to continue discussion rather than if they posted in time so that their topic isn't a duplicate.

I mean take a look at this scrub: http://www.smbxgame.com/forums/v ... 69&t=10940

Clearly the only interest was "Oh boy, I get to make a joke and have people post in a thread I made." It's just abuse of the system as far as I'm concerned. Am I alone on thinking this? Thoughts?

I kinda think there should be more discussion in the screenshot thread also it's mostly people just posting something and thats it. Most of the time people get ignored and don't get any feedback so how are they supposed to know what they could do btter?

Why don't we leave these kind of topics (this pretty much only applies to the screenshot thread as the irc quotes and forum posts threads are now gone) to staff?

Complaining about people shitposting will just make people shitpost even more, to be honest in the end no one (including me) will care IMO. The only way to stop shitposting is making said rules harder, and even then people WILL complain.

hey why don't we respond to to what i'm asking for, champ? the concern is making these new topics for no reason other than ego or whatever rather than for discussion. the thread qualities i've seen this happen to are having less quality with every new topic.

imo we should just make it so either the original op (for stuff like PGE threads or the likes) or Mods (for the screenshot threads) can make these new threads.

Totally agree with this it would be easier and we don't get people to fight over who will make the next one.

For specific threads that serve a purpose exclusively related to one person (PGE, etc.), then obviously it would be the best choice for them to make a new thread (or a staff member can make it if they're not around and discussion should continue, and then switch authors later). For other threads, it doesn't matter.

Thread creation is something that should be done on a case-by-case basis. If someone creates a new thread when the last one's only at 99 pages, we'll just lock it and wait. If somebody habitually does it, we'll talk to them. It's not that big of a deal and there's no reason to overcorrect an issue like this.

Yes, exactly.

Superiorstar, man, you have a really messed up view of the way things happen here.

When you see things like this happen over and over again, you would expect things to repeat completely from the ghetto.

okay but in one respect, if we didn't archive at 100 we wouldn't have this issue.

but since i'm not supposed to say that, yes i do agree. puns are fun and all but shouldn't be the primary reason for a continuation.

maybe the op should be the one allowed to create the continuation thread. or since an admin/mod has to archive it anyway, have them make the new discussion thread.

Does that mean that he doesn't understand how things naturally happen or that he doesn't understand what you'll let happen?

Archiving topics at 100 pages is not the cause of the problem. The problem is that people are too concerned about creating new versions of threads, to the point that people do it before the thread hits 100 pages because they want to so badly. We fix this by fixing the people.

but people get that complex because we archive at 100 pages?

(complex?)

People need to stop being so concerned with creating new versions of threads. It's as simple as that. Same thing as the "stop caring about users that are staff/banned" point that I brought up a few months ago.

Also, I really don't care if people want to jump at creating new versions of threads as long as they're being mature about it and don't do it until the thread hits 100 pages.

i use complex to denote like, paranoia or anxiety. like when you stare at someone, you give them a complex? no? idk i picked that up from my mom.

Anyways to be fair, this wouldn't even be an issue if topics weren't archived at 100 pages, which i honestly don't understand. is there a bug or something or is to stay tidy or what???

It's for organisation factor for this forum actually... as far as I can tell. Well it's how they work with filled up topics like that.

Oh, THAT kind of complex. I read it differently. I'm assuming now that you mean a superiority complex or something like that, which I can understand.

But, like I said, the 100-page practice isn't the cause of the problem. The cause of the problem is peoples' attitudes toward creating new topics. Also, like GhostHawk said in the OP, the 100-page rule isn't up for discussion here.
