actually, for indie stuff. linux is great for that

Word Processing

Animation

Hell, there are even films that are probably made on Linux. I can't comment on the quality of them since I don't watch movies, but it's something

Now, this is for professionals on their own computers obviously, you won't get hired if you go to a big movie company and say "oh yeah, i have over 3 years of experience in <insert open source software here that has no certification program>. But you said on their own computers. So there.

Oh, by own computers I meant their computers in their offices XD Bad wording on my part, but that's what I meant, because I agree that people use Linux on their home computers. Now, for animation, I meant professional animation, like Frozen or Inside Out, because any OS is capable of some form of computer animation...
well for professional animation, you do realise they use Macs, right? at least 90% of them anyway.

HOLY FUCKING SHIT I JUST SPAT PEPSI EVERYWHERE

You're really funny. Really sit down and use the two and then come back to me. Windows is godawful when it comes to multitasking.
When I had 4gb of RAM, programs were constantly having to reload after being minimized after a certain period of time. I don't have this issue now with 12gb, but it wasn't even an issue on Linux/OS X.

Honestly though, have you ever even used a Mac or Linux machine? And don't say "yeah I used a mac but it was a 2007 plastic macbook and i used it like last year and it fucking sucked". of course it's gonna suck, those were the Core 2 Duo models running fucking Lion. Lion was a terrible release, but Apple cleaned up shop alot with later ones.

And if you've never even used Linux for more than just an hour or two, leave. You have no room to talk.

Go back to your shitty AMD 8 Core processors clocked at 4 GHz that can't beat an i7 Quad Core running at 3.5 GHz...
???
That literally has nothing to do with this debate. And for one thing, more GHz != better processor. There's alot that goes into that. Something tells me you really really don't know what you're talking about. Oh that's right, you said that because you have nothing more to say because you haven't used Linux for an extended period of time..
SnifitGuy wrote: All joking aside, I think it all comes down to what you like to do with your computer. Linux is good for people who like to code and do similar activities, Mac is good for massive productivity, and Windows has an arguably easy UI and receives the most love from programs out there, especially video games...
Mac has an easy UI also. The only reason Windows receives the most love is because

- .NET Framework makes coding for Windows ridiculously easy.
- Everyone buys Windows PCs because they're cheap and they need a computer, not necessarily because they're good. This may have actually changed nowadays but that's why people bought Windows in the first place.

okay now you're just nitpicking. it was relevant to show how funny i thought your previous statements were.
SnifitGuy wrote: My point as to why Windows gets more love. Linux does a lot, yes, but it's not for enthusiasts like gamers, video editors, etc. Am I calling coders non-enthusiasts? No, they are. It's just that Linux is better for really just learning how a computer works and actually creating programs, while Windows offers a standard OS that is very rich in features. The only problem with Linux is that since there are different distros, it's actually inefficient because the more popular ones cost money, and some aren't even compatible with other distros. That's the cost of Linux's versatility, and I think you can agree. Mac OS is good because its quick and wonderful at multitasking with it's clean OS. The downside is that it isn't very versatile and is much more expensive than Windows. Windows, like you said, makes coding for itself very easy and is very cheap, arguably a sweet spot over Mac because of its similar features. Mac is like an AIO package, Linux is a DIY kit, and Windows is somewhere in between the two.
Your almost there, just one thing: Mac can be very versatile ;) http://brew.sh/ And yes, they are very expensive but there's hidden benefits that most people don't see.

Linux is fun, if you really want to get into it you should look into a Raspberry Pi to start out with.

Okay, let's just stop here. Nothing has been accomplished and we're so derailed that Windows 10 hasn't been mentioned for pages.

Generally, I've heard from people that made the switch that it's got a better interface than 8, but it's not even an improvement over 7. So the message I've been getting is that it's a step forward from 8, which was a step back from 7. The only difference is that they're shoving in advertisements and being incredibly shady with private information. Needless to say, it doesn't seem worth it. Keep in mind we live in a world in which Windows XP still has support, so 7 users are in no danger of losing extensive support any time soon.

yeah ok mr. backseat mod
SnifitGuy wrote:The thing about privacy; what do you actually need to hide? I know I'm sounding like one of those untrustworthy people who asks you to give info, but seriously, is there anything you have to hide. Also, a lot of people disliked 8 because of its start menu, mainly, but I personally prefer it to 7, so to say that it's a fact that it's a step back from 7 is bullshit. And honestly, Windows 10, provided you have 7/8, is free, and a free OS is nothing to laugh at. No, it might not be your OS of choice, but you have to admit that the ability to try Windows 10 as a technical preview for free is pretty compelling considering you get the full version of Windows, with all the glitches, and it's for free...
even if you have nothing to hide, it still feels nice knowing no one snoops on you, at least that what i guess people are saying.
i agree with you snifit on the start menu, i quite liked the large tiles and organisation and variety i had, with the 7 start menu it was just a linear list. 10 balances this perfectly. Microsoft only made 10 free so they could try and take Apple's share and so that Apple would stop laughing at them at their press conferences when they go over the last version of OS X and how it was more widely adopted than 8. 10 was pretty much rushed. Microsoft fixed the last minute bugs and random freezes in the preview builds, and pushed it out. It's really not done, it's stable, but not done. And this is evident by the fact that the control panel still exists.

If you kept up with Windows 10 development at all, you'd know that the control panel was supposed to be removed entirely in favour of the new Settings app.

Also yeah, Windows 10's new structure is a rolling release type, in which updates just trickle down from Developers/Unstable to stable. Instead of major releases as a more traditional OS does.

No there is still a control panel in Windows 10. There shouldn't be. The Settings app should be fully featured. Although I will say, the level of "it's supposed to be tablet oriented why does some shit still open on the desktop" is drastically lower than 8.

***** == monopoly?

yeah because people see they need a computer, so they skimp out and get a cheap one. guess what, chances are it has windows. people get accustomed to windows, people buy more expensive windows computers. software developers see that and develop for the more omnipotent platform.

it's sad

I think they mean that its available free for 12 months and after 12 months people who don't have it already will have to purchase it.

Except when it's not and can be changed to fit the user's needs.

Ofc there's shitty FOSS, but when the software is properly built, it's always better than proprietary software.
