clash, v. (third-person singular simple present clashes, present participle clashing, simple past and past participle clashed) - When two graphics don't look good together.
Which graphics don't look good together? Which do?

SMB2 with SMB3 actually looks good together because of the similarities between the art styles. But SMW with YI are perfect together since both games have a cartoon art style.
What don't look good together is anything with SM or LoZ2: AoL. These games are better off in separate sections (1 with SM and 1 with LoZ). Also, 8-bit and 16-bit clashes... HARD, and for obvious reasons.

imo styles that work together are SMB1 + SMB2, SMB2 + SMB3, SMW + YI, SMB1/SMB2 + Metroid (don't ask me why lmao, probably because of the similar "no outline" styles), and sometimes SMB3 + SMW (mainly SMW BGOs with SMB3 tilesets). But then again, that's just my personal opinion and everyone has to decide for themselves. There is no objective way to compare different art styles because art is subjective. What looks good to some, doesn't have to look good to others.

I typically like to keep only one style per section, and only one or two tilesets per section. The SMW checkpoint never seems to clash to me though, and goes well with everything except non-16-bit things. I feel similarly about most exits (It's the invasion 2's fault).
SMB2 goes well with everything but SMW IMO.

Anything will 1x1 pixels will clash with everything with no 1x1 pixels. Either completely use 1x1 pixels or don't use them at all.

Lmao time to abuse this.
SMB3 + metriod might work, and metriod + sonic kind of works.

SMB1+SMB2 usually works really well.

Hey, I thought clash meant "2 level themes that don't go good together." Wait, does clash also mean, "2 graphic themes that don't go good together?"
Anyways, LoZ and SMB2 go good together, don't they?

Just use 8-bit and 16-bit and you get the answer.

Although I do agree somewhat, 8-bit and 16-bit graphics can meld pretty well together on occasions. SMW is one game that does this to an extent.

You can pair Super Mario All-Stars graphics with the usual 16-bit, but you can't really pair the original NES graphics. Except maybe SMB2 (North America).

What doesn't appeal to me regarding graphic combinations, taking style out of this is when someone has an individually drawn or ripped graphic whose context is out of place unless the ambient theme itself that defines the aesthetic is supposed to justify said graphical piece (usually by juxtaposition). And by context, I mean in proximity to the ambience of the theme that defines the aesthetic. Would a level taking place on an iceburg (foreground) located in the middle of a equatorial desert (background) be that jarring?
Graphic stylistic clashes are also a problem, but are not as worthy to be pointed out as you would think unless it affects the above and if it detracts from the goal of adding your personal graphical touch (your very own graphic style) to your works. This is why I do not have a problem with certain YI graphics in other works, provided that you modify them to be cohesive in your levels.
Regarding 8-bit and 16-bit: They do not specifically mean NES and SNES/Genesis era graphics, respectively as they are used to show how many bits are used for a pixel. You may want to read this: http://tumblokami.tumblr.com/post/10665 ... lor-pallet
