Earliest version of Windows that SMBX can run on?

Postby Ecruteak » Wed Jun 24, 2015 5:30 am

I recently downloaded VirtualBox and installed Windows XP (to relive my childhood nostalgia) and downloaded SMBX on it. I opened SMBX and it took a while to open, then eventually stopped responding. I understand that XP is slow, but I just want to ask. What is the earliest version of Windows that SMBX can run on? Thanks in advance for the help.

Years ago when I still had XP it worked. It should be able to run on earlier versions because VB6 itself was released in 1998. SMBX should probably be able to run on Win2000 and maybe further back but I haven't tested that.

Oh, okay. I didn't know when VB was even made.

Even so, how do I get SMBX to actually respond in it? How did you? When I open the Editor, it makes the coin sound, then the spinning coin gif plays and eventually freezes, then I have to end the program. Help?

How long have you left it? Also how much RAM have you allocated to your virtualbox? Is your computer even strong enough to run both SMBX and emulate a Windows XP environment? (It should be. Most modern computers should.)

Quoting Wohlstand here, SMBX should be able to run on Windows 98 or later, with the min requirement of 512MB or RAM.

I remember running SMBX on Windows 7 and it would appear frozen, but it was really just loading all of the graphic and sound files.

Well, I allocated 512 MB of RAM to the VirtualBox, and I'm running it on my Mac. The actual space that the virtual machine has is about 9.98 GB. Does that help?

Also, I downloaded it and left it for about a few hours.

PS- I actually have SMBX on the Windows 7 PC I have, but I wanted to do this anyway.

Windows XP itself requires 512MB of RAM (for 32 bit). You should allocate at least 1GB of RAM.

Yea, Windows XP will work slow with 512 MB, so, to have better performance need 1024 MB RAM

I've been following all your advice, but it still happens. Here's what I was trying to describe (the square in the middle is supposed to be the icon that pops up when clicking on Level Editor. I moved my window around it to show you what happens)-

And here's the Virtual Machine specs, for reference-

How long have you waited for it to try to open? Even if it appears frozen it's still loading.

I've waited for about five minutes now, maybe more, but it still stays frozen. Is this supposed to happen?

Wait for at least 20 minutes (I had to wait for 20 minutes for SMBX to load when I had XP).

I've been waiting for about 20 minutes now, and it still isn't responding. I don't know what to do.

Oh. I think there was a bug about having to disable sound for SMBX on Mac Computers. Try that.

I just read and tried that. It looks like disabling sound just makes it unresponsive faster (the coin doesn't even spin). I probably need to wait, but I'm just impatient. I guess I'll just use the other SMBX, then.

Well if you still want to edit levels, use PGE Editor. It loads in seconds!

As I first got SMBX it was on Windows XP that I have it by my own which is Laptop based (or Notebook, whichever you prefer since it doesn't have a Disk Reader). The game itself as of how it runs was ok. The loading time was around over 1 minutes but under 2 minutes (~1:30 Minutes at best) and then it booted up. SMBX itself was fine except if there are a lot of stuff going on like having a lot of blocks, Background objects and so on, makes the entire game lag due to how the Performance works on my Laptop Windows XP. After like multiple years with quite a lot of Change on my Laptop (other datas added and certain stuff deleted... even my antivirus Software has been deleted since WinXP isn't supported anymore and I don't trust to connect that Laptop to the Internet because WinXP is not "up to date" anymore. Also that Antivirus Software was way too powerful for that PC to work with which takes a lot of time), that SMBX program always runs very slowly ingame and in the editor, no matter what I do so the only usable way to Play SMBX so far is Windows 7 that I use mainly.

I know that it doesn't exactly help you with that but I just want to share my own Story as of when I got SMBX on one of the earliest OS (operating system) that I own. Windows 95 was lost in that time (it broke at around ~2006-2007 or so, sadly unknown).

Alright, I've decided that the solution is going to be to use PGE- it loads quickly! Thanks for all the help provided, anyway, guys!

In theory, SMBX could run on Windows 95, but only if it supported more memory. It might also take forever to load, and (large window aside) I don't think it would be able to run in Safe Mode. Even then, I think it would be limited to version SMBX 1.2 which didn't have as many features.

In my experience, the 9x family tended to allow more software than the NT family. Even XP wasn't able to keep up, and I still have some 9x compatible software that won't run on 7.

Okay, let's test: I will install now Windows 95 and Windows 98 on my VirtualBox and will try to run any SMBX: 1.3 and older

1) Sorry than evervything in 16 colors, because I haven't right video drivers for Win 95/98 VirtualBox guests.
EDIT: I just installed right driver and have TRUE COLOR with 1024x768!
2) Here are CLEAN Windows 95/98 builts witch are just installed and has nothing custom software or updates installed
3) Used original SMBX 1.3 [not 1.3.0.1] build

My report about testing under Windows 95 (B)
Spoiler: show
Installer works fine:
Image

But SMBX don't wanna run, even I have put right DLL file into system/system32 folder :P
Image
EDIT: Same when I have been installed video driver:
Image
Result: SMBX Doesn't works on Windows 95
My report about testing under Windows 98 (Second Edition)
Spoiler: show
WebBox has been successfully started, but when I trying to load game, SMBX freezes (on Sound&Music loading step. I killed SMBX from Ctrl+Alt+Delete dialog box)
Image

When I tried to run editor, it freezes too,
Image

BUT when I spawned Ctrl+Alt+Del menu, I see the flood of RunDLL32:
Image
I killed SMBX again...

Result: SMBX can work on Window 98 but when you will install custom audio codecs and when you will have all installed drivers

EDIT: I just installed:
  • Direct X 9.0c
  • Video driver
  • KLite Codec pack (one of legacy packages which can work with Windows 98)
SMBX successfully continues loading after place where it was frozen and no more floods with Rundll's:
Image

But, it freezes about end of loading, and I was killed SMBX again
Image
Result: SMBX can work on Window 98 if you will solve reason of freezing on loading process
Windows ME/2000 Comming soon

I just need to put some files on my Win2000 computer and I can test it.
