Castle of Dark Energies

Postby Emral » Wed May 13, 2015 8:47 pm

A quick training on moving layers and eerie placement, and the level I am sending to vinesauce's contest as soon as the activation e-mail arrives. It took me 3 days to make this level, and I want to see what you guys think about it!
All graphics have been made/recoloured by me, except for the background, which someone ripped from Age of Mythology.
The music is the first half of the 17th theme on Kill la Kill's soundtrack.

Download from mediafire

I've also uploaded a youtube video of the level:

Have fun playing!

Finally, I get an inspiration from this level. The GFX was great, really want to use them......

Yup. I released this tileset a year ago.

I have updated the level, fixing a scenery error I previously overlooked, as well as changing the music's pitch.

I'm surprised i didn't lag because of all the moving layers!

This level was very nice and decent. There were a few NPC errors. Like in the second half of he level, one of the coin thwomps cannot be avoided if you aim to to get the dragon coin. Also, the disapaering blocks was a little mean since I fell into a bottomless pit because the block dissabpeared out from under me. The arrow just made me think to go right, I dolid not know to go fast. (Yes, the speed runner went slow) I would give this a 8/10

Wait for it to drop and while it's moving upwards run past it. Worked for me every time. I'm not gonna make Dragon Coins incredibly easy and straightforward to access :P

Awww I added the arrow just to avoid such occasions. If I cared a little bit more about this level I would add a timer ticking down, speeding up as the layer swap comes closer. But frankly, that's too tedious to impliment IMO

However, I'm glad you liked the level!

Castle of Dark Energies

Aesthetics: 10/10

This level was simply amazing. The whole ambiente, the tileset, the music, the background changing with the lightning, everything harmonized perfectly to create the atmosphere in this level. Even little things like coins and powerups have been adjusted to fit the level. There is literally only one small complaint I have and that is that the pillars can very easily be confused for blocks, but you get used to it after some time so it's not even worth detracting a point for that.

NPCs: 9/10

This would've almost gotten a perfect score if it weren't for the really unfair Thwomps in some places, like for example the very first you encounter. It's directly behind the item box so that you don't pay attention to it until it's too late. Also a little fewer eeries wouldn't have hurt. Besides that though, the NPC placement was good, the trick-Thwomp is a really cool idea that I haven't seen before I think. Coin and powerup placement were good, you always had a mushroom when you needed one, really friendly.

Gameplay & Design: 10/10

I really can't think of any flaws this level had, the gimmicks were really clever, like the rising/falling lava level, the part where you're closed in by the lava, the moving blocks, the section that changes as you go along and of course the lightning in the background. All of these gimmicks are really clever and make the level unique and enjoyable. There's really not much to say about this level except for that I really enjoyed it.

Overall, this is a deserved 9.3/10, and is therefore moved to The Best.

Thanks for your review <3 I can't reply with clever formatting because I'm on mobile right now but I'll adress the issues you've mentioned nontheless.

I thought a bit about making the top parts of the pillars solid, and I can understand that they caused a bit of difficulty, but I decided on leave them be and place some outside of danger in the beginning to introduce the player to them.

This level isn't intended to be incredibly easy. It's probably Nintendo-style world 7 or 8. I haven't played a mario game in ages haha. Point is, the entire idea of the thwomps is to screw you over. The first thwomp you encounter is placed VERRRY high up, unreachable with any character, and serves as an example of what's yet to come. It tells the player that any block can be a thwomp. Even though it's bullshit and rage enducing at times.

I'll remember your criticism on the eeries for future levels I make.

I can't take this comment seriously because you think castle levels need a boss.
