Microphones

Postby SilverDeoxys563 » Tue Apr 14, 2015 4:09 am

Since mic usage seems to be a hot topic in our Minecraft server right now, I thought I'd broaden the horizons and ask all you guys: Do you have a mic? Is it crappy? How often do you use it?

I actually have not just a mic, but a headset: the Corsair Vengeance 1500. Mic noise cancels and seems to be top notch quality. It costed $80 and came with warranty, so I'm pretty happy with it. I need to be less embarrassed about reviving my hiatus'd Youtube channel and just do it, you know?

I have a Turtle Beach X32 headset. However, I need to find the adapter for it.

Webcam has a microphone, and I use it the same way bossedit8 does!

I have an old, pretty shitty Logitech headset but the quality isn't THAT bad. I don't remember what model it is.

I'm thinking of getting a Corsair Vengeance 1500 or a Blue Yeti, but I'll probably get the Vengeance because I need a new headset anyway.

Personally, I don't trust low-end headsets. I used to have a ~$15 one but it broke when my friend's netbook fell over with it plugged in, and snapped the 3.5mm connector. Haven't had much interest in anything under $30 since.

To any Let's Players out there:
Good microphones are loads better than headset mics any day. If you can spare the ~$40 for a good separate mic, it'll definitely be an improvement.

Of course you are correct, as no headset can compete with an expensive mic. For casual gamers, however, headsets with decent quality are very useful, such as for myself...
True, and when it comes to bang-for-buck the $20-50 range is really good for casual gaming.

I have a Turtle Beach px22 headset with a built in mic. Basically it's an $80 trip wire that plays music.

What about recording? You need a great mic or headset for that. My Blue Snowball was $80, but my mother got it for a good deal for it.

You overpayed. For recording your voice for YouTube or Twitch, the Snowball iCE is half that and has equal quality as long as you're the only one talking into it. And even super-expensive headset mics aren't good for recording anyhow.

If you want a quality mic, the Blue Snowball isn't all that great for it's price, just pay the extra $40-$60 to get the Blue Yeti, which a lot of YouTubers use.

Vinny, the guy from Vinesauce, uses a fairly expensive, but pretty high quality headset+mic, and it's better quality than the Blue Yeti as far as I'm aware.

Most starting YouYubers are 10-16 and can't exactly fork out a hundred bucks on a mic.

Honestly, I'd rather use a $30 headset mic and work with the audio in Audacity using minor equalization, noise removal and that fun stuff than use unedited audio from a $60 standalone mic.
