Re: TGCA REMAKE! (Talkin' Turnip CONFIRMED!!)

Postby Squishy Rex » Sun Dec 14, 2014 6:56 am

I actually forgot about Talkin' Turnip! It's good to see him return, after all I guess it wouldn't be TGCA without him. He really should be used in more episodes. I do believe we should all hail Talkin' Turnip.

Also in regards to the episode itself, I'm really looking forward to its completion, it looks so reminiscent yet so new at the same time. A good sign that this episode has been made by the right person.

Ahaha, thanks. I was actually debating to myself which classic episode I should remake because I was out of ideas for levels at that moment. I was first thinking the original Invasion, but Red already did it with TI2. Then there was TPC, but Blueoak was already doing that (under the alias SkySpark/Megaspark) and I'm not sure if that's complete. The only one left was TGCA. No-one had even thought of remaking that one, and that fact, plus that it was the first SMBX episode I ever played and it taught me the controls of SMBX, meant the nostalgia hit the hardest in that episode, so the boat went to that episode, and it still is going to be.

Re: TGCA REMAKE! (Talkin' Turnip CONFIRMED!!)

Postby HeroLinik » Mon Dec 15, 2014 3:32 pm

Oh, and about Talkin' Turnip, his location and speech in a few levels has been tweaked, but largely still intact, such as in Pleasant Fields and Castle of Despair. Pleasant Fields is the first level, not Koopa Forest and Sunny Valley, which are accessed much later. This is supposed to make the game easier than the original, so in Pleasant Fields, he says the same speech as he did in Sunny Valley in the original. However, the Talkin' Turnip in Pleasant Fields in the original version that explained about the item box has been removed completely because the reserve item isn't automatically dropped when the player is damaged.

In Castle of Despair all the NPCs as well as Talkin' Turnip now talk about Link going to revive Mario because the level has a Link filter and is a fully-fledged Zelda-like level unlike in the original, which was just a Mushroom Kingdom castle. I've tried to not tweak it so it loses its feel of the original, so I've made it so Talkin' Turnip knows it's Mario, and he's just changed into Link.

Re: TGCA REMAKE! (New screen, MAJOR GAMEPLAY INFO!!)

Postby HeroLinik » Wed Dec 31, 2014 11:30 am

~Major gameplay info, please read~

But first of all...you get your first taste of the dungeons. I've done screenshot-worthy work on that section of the castle, as demonstrated here:

Image

OK, this is the major brunt of the info that must be brought unto y'all:

This episode's gameplay will be in the style of Tower of Biased. This is partly because the ToB series is one of the most famous hub episodes around, and the community can easily relate to it when they think of hub episodes, but it's also to prevent sequence-breaking. This was an issue in the original TGCA because you could actually explore the entire castle with as little as 8 stars, by getting 6 stars to access the basement, then fighting the boss of the basement with 8 stars to unlock the red switch. The problem is that this is very little compared to the 30 needed to reach Bowser, so here, a boss must be fought at the end of every section to collect red stars, which unlock doors to different sections of the castle. This includes the main floor and the balcony, where there were no bosses.

The Toads in the dungeons actually serve a purpose. In the original, they were just there for the player to visit and free from their cells, but here, the dungeon plays a more important role, because the player has to press a special switch to destroy all the cages at once. This is the only way to free the Toads trapped inside, and the resulting events will give the player a secret star.

The joke levels are getting scrapped completely. Rejoice, joke levels haters, I've decided myself there's no point keeping the joke levels! The secret joke level that I was blabbering on about earlier was actually going to be a Frozen-themed level with a Valtteri cover playing. Since Valtteri refused everyone to use the cover, plus the fact I couldn't get an Elsa NPC for the boss, I couldn't even start it. It was going to be called "The Kingdom of Isolation" and it actually had a plot behind it - Bowser had taken over Elsa's mind and the Koopa Troop had taken over Elsa's palace! No more hiding them in Twilight Town, they're gone forever!

I'll be posting more updates as the episode goes on. The bosses will be revealed later.

Guys. this definitely isn't dead!

Even though this topic has dropped a lot down the pile of old threads, I've been working on this non-stop. The result? I just finished another level - Bowser's tower. Here's a screenshot:

No offense, but Shikaternia + Sednaiur + collect the SMW red stars sounds practically as generic as a SMB3 recolor.

On another note, if those are the bone piranhas I edited, thanks for using them ;)

If you could take a suggestion, I think it would be cool to have Twilight Town be an all original bonus world. It has a star theme and everything.

The original TGCA was really flat and barren and had no sideplots whatsoever - it was completely linear, and there were no custom graphics. People only like it because of nostalgia. Although these custom graphics are generic, they weren't in the original TGCA.

You're welcome. I was wondering myself who used them.

That's already been confirmed. It's gonna have a star theme and everything. However, the joke levels are gone completely.

Eh, to be honest, I'm not entirely certain these April Fools "jokes" are worth it much for this community, not very convincing to be honest. I feel most of these April Fools jokes need to be said in actual conversation so they catch people off guard, or at least need to be very subtle so that when people point them out it all comes forward and becomes clear, much like a Phoenix Wright game. Yeah the links are okay and stuff but doing stuff like this I'd have to say not a lot of people would fall for to be honest.

But, I understand it's all in good fun, hmm?

One of these days, there's going to be a "Boy who cried Wolf" moment and by the time they realize it's actually legit, they'll be the last people to be trying it out...One good reason I generally don't post GFX or episode updates on April Fool's Day. Thank God it's all over in 4 hours.

The only problem is, if I mouse over the URL link, it tells me in the bottom left in Google Chrome that the link will direct me to Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" music video. I've been on the Internet long enough to know the exact web URL for that specific video, so it stands out immediately. But I do suppose there will be a "Boy who cried Wolf" moment, though when that moment happens I expect to not roll over a URL that links to a Rick Roll, just sayin'.

Also, 18 hours left here, baybeeeeee!!!!!

You were so slow at making this episode that at first I didn't think it was really done... And I was right.
By the way, is there actual progress?

Castlewars you gave the WRONG LINK and that's a video.

Could you fix it so we can download it?

"The user concerned has made the video in your country." = This video is not avaiable in your country.

Can't download it cause of that.
