Like I said the changes will probably all be minimal, such as a change to the tools depending on their quality. I'll submit all of the changes once I finish them, minus the music changes since I'm going to leave them a surprise.

That actually reminds me of some challenge I did with my sister a while back, it could actually work as a more challenging Survival map. Since there won't really be any underground environments since the map will be entirely flat, I will have to amp up the generation for villages so it doesn't take a million years to find one. This could work, thanks for the suggestion! My only question would be, would people want me to have the worldspawn in a village, or have a small hub area, or what exactly?

NOVEMBER 27th, 2014
My wife had given me this journal to keep record of the adventure head of me, so I suppose I'll use it.
Today is the day I leave Northridge. There is supposedly a portal not far from here to another dimension. I'm going with a group to explore the dimension, colonists there have already set up a small settlement.
From what we have gathered, there is a strange shrine a few hundred miles from the settlement, and although that is quite a distance, it is still something that they want investigated, since this place is supposedly uninhabited by any humanoid species.
I guess I better pack up now, we should be leaving soon anyway. Not sure when I'll get back home, so I better say my goodbyes around town.

NOVEMBER 28th, 2014
After a day's worth of travelling, it's about midnight now. We've come across the portal. We're not sure where this thing will bring us, hopefully it puts us right where the colonists are...
Apparently we're going to be sticking around this place until dawn, that way we have plenty of rest and we have some more time to investigate the portal itself.

NOVEMBER 29th, 2014?
Well, we went through the portal around noon yesterday, and when we came out the other side, it's midnight again...?
That's kind of strange.
The settlement is set up just a few miles away from the portal, about a day's travel. Apparently one of the colonists was skeptical about being around the portal, something didn't seem quite right to him.
The livestock and wildlife we've seen around here so far looks the same as it is back home, so does the grass and trees and all that.
Maybe this isn't another dimension, but just some place very far away from home?
Who knows.

NOVEMBER 30th, 2014?
Well, we reached the settlement at about noon. One of the scientists there is looking at a way to possibly move the portal into the settlement, and if we can go back through and come out at home again, if we can move the portal there into Ridgeway or SMBXtown.
We're going to stay here for a few days to sort of straighten out and get a lay of the land a little more. Whenever we're ready to leave, we were pointed in the direction the shrine is supposedly in.

DECEMBER 8th, 2014?
We stayed at the settlement for a little over a week, and I think we're ready to get going. It's a two days travel to the shrine by foot, and since we have no other mode of transportation, it looks like we'll be going on foot.

DECEMBER 10th, 2014?
We haven't reached the shrine yet, but we're close. It's kind of small up close, but from a distance, it does look awfully big. Not sure why that is, might just be an optical illusion?

DECEMBER 11th, 2014?
Well, we're at the shrine, and nothing really exciting is going on here except for this strange hole going directly downward into a dark pit. The hole has some strange, infinite water source flowing from it as well. I think we're going to stop here and rest a while, I'm not sure when, or if, we'll explore any further.

DECEMBER 12th, 2014?
So, after an agreement, we figured that it would make sense if some of our guys stayed up here and I'm sent down into the hole with a radio. That seems kind of silly and like a stupid stunt, but I'll do it I guess.
They aren't sure if I'll be able to get back up from going down the hole, so they've given me a bunch of mining picks, shovels, supplies to last me a while until they can send an excavation team to help free me.
They say if I need any help, I'll use the radio.
This'll be easy.
Alright, I'm all geared up and I think I'm ready to jump down. I'll write when I reach the bottom I guess, if there's anything interesting.

JANUARY 2nd, 2015?
I dropped my journal somewhere in this damn cavern, but I finally found it. I thought I'd lost it. Not sure if anyone is going to be coming down to save my ass, I'm kind of worried. The radio's frequencies are going insane. I wonder if it has to do with that giant...
Probably not.
This place is quite strange, I feel small compared to this, and it isn't even that big itself... But there seems to be so much power emanating from it, it makes me feel powerless, like a mortal...

JANUARY 20th, 2015?
Well, I'm sure if they really were going to save me, they would have by now. I've managed to mine around a bit but these pickaxes were quite shit honestly. Why did they give them to me if they expected me to escape? Or maybe they didn't want me to escape... They knew I wouldn't be able to get out of here and they wouldn't send an excavation team...
I'm getting paranoid down here. Somebody help, maybe?

FEBRUARY 1st, 2015?
My food supply is almost gone, I've been eating bits and pieces of bread for a while now, but I've gotten almost too weak to write. Something is draining me of my power... I might just leave notes around here to deter anyone that tries to enter, that is if they find a way out...
I'm not sure why I'm writing in this journal anymore, it'd be a miracle if I even make it out of here alive.

FEBRUARY 19th, 2015?
I'm starving down here. I'm not going to make it much longer, I know I'm not going to be getting out anytime soon. For anyone that reads this, please bring it back to the colony, if it's still there.
Being down here by myself, I think I've either gone insane or have made a shocking revelation, but I'm almost certain this thing, be it a crystal or whatever it is, is actually protecting this world...
Yesterday, I was taking my normal walk around the cave, when the whole place shook around. A huge beam of light escaped out the top of the crystal, and tore through the ceiling above. It's quite bright up there, but I'm not sure if it reaches the surface or not, I haven't seen the light of day for a few good months now...
This crystal thing has eight tendril-like things coming out of it, I'm not sure what they do exactly, but something leads me to believe that they either drain energy from the world to power the crystal, or the crystal emits a foreign energy from it to feed, or power, the world itself.
I've also noticed that the crystal has been growing slightly. It was pretty small, just floating there in the middle of the cave before, but the tendrils have gotten thicker and the crystal has gotten bigger, this makes me believe further that this crystal is eating the energy out of this world. I'm not too sure about this...
I might not make it through tonight, I guess if I do, I'll write.

FEBRUARY 31st, 2015?
I found some glowing mushrooms down here, they provided me with some food, not sure if they're poisonous or not, but I feel great after eating them. The water from the pools by the entrance of the cave and from beneath the crystal taste a lot different from each other...
The entrance water tastes like rain water enriched with minerals, though the crystal water tastes... I'm not sure...

I've been puking up blood recently, I'm not sure what's causing this, but I feel like absolute shit now.
Can't say the same for my friend... I think his name is Steve... Or Martin... I think it's Martin...
Martin is asking me how I got here, I said the same to him...
His name probably isn't Martin isn't Martin. Maybe his name is Eric... I didn't ask him actually, he usually just disappears when I ask that.
Eric wants me to eat more of the mushrooms.

Considering you're considering creating one, and having it change little, this might not work, but I do know of a good Mario themed resource pack called Super Mario Medley. It makes everything Mario themed, yet somehow it's still pretty easy to tell what everything is... I've used it somewhat frequently, it's one of the best resource packs I've ever found.
