Need help/suggestions

Well this year I must write an extended essay because it's my last year in school. I'm going to do it in English so I need some suggestions. I need titles of literature books (only those who have been originally written in English) which I could do my essay about, or films that touch topics that affect the society (such as discrmination for example). Hope you could help.

Depending on the difficulty of the book you're looking for, I would recommend both To Kill a Mockingbird (by Harper Lee) and The Outsiders (by S. E. Hinton).
East of Eden (by John Steinbeck) is another good choice although more difficult. Steinbeck wrote other famous books such as the Grapes of Wrath as well.

I'm not too into literature myself, so there's definitely plenty of other books out there.

Hmm seeing that Grapes of Wrath (I looked at it in Wikipedia) was written by John Steinbeck I guess I could give it a shot. I read Of Mice and Men (written by him as well) and I really liked it. So now I would like to ask what kind of topics (such as the American Dream in Of Mice and Men) can I find in Grapes of Wrath?

That's really helpful, thanks a lot. I guess I'll read that book. Now there's only one thing left before I start: I must formulate an appropiate research question for the extended essay.

I was thinking on something like this: To what extent does John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath lets us know about the northamerican society between 19XX and 19XX?

I haven't read the book yet so I'm not sure if that'll be appropiate. It seems that you've read it already, so would you help me revise the question?
