Subcon Masquerade (old level)

They're not that bad, but they're not that good either.

Alright, I will be giving this level an official review when I get home from school.

(yesterday I was going to do this for another level but didn't say this, and someone beat me to reviewing it)

Today, I cried and raged at the same time.

Subcon Masquerade
Official Review

Design/Gameplay - 3/10
So... uhh... this was a... level. To be frank, it wasn't a very good one. Where do I begin? Okay, so the character selection was unnessecary. If we wanted to play as another character, we'd do it before we entered the level. And the way to get out of that chamber if you choose Mario is... odd. Anyway, let's move on. There were WAY too many NPCs in this level, and a few of them were bugged. Standing on a mini Shy Guy when it walks up a hill will hurt you. Many of them, like the flying ones, cannot be picked up. There were way too many slopes, and they were all very rough and ugly. There was a good balance of powerups in the level, except for at the midpoint where you gave us a Leaf AND a Fire Flower. The platform riding at the second half of the level was a PAIN, but whatever. I feel like the gimmick where you have to get the switch to open the path onward was an interesting idea, but poorly executed. You gave us these short "puzzles" that provided no challenge whatsoever. That's actually pretty odd, considering that the rest of the level was hard as ****. Again, WAY too many NPCs. Those spike platform things at the beginnings are still there, and the one exception to the good layers and events. There's almost no way of telling when it's changing, and you actually claimed that these were removed in the update. They, in fact, were not.

A couple things involving unavoidable NPCs:

How do you get past this one?

I'm sure there was a way to avoid the last one, but this hits you as you come out of the vase. You truly can't avoid this.
Good job with the layers and events, by the way. They were really smooth and they looked nice. That's all I have to say, but... uhh... a lot of things can be fixed.

Graphics/Atmosphere - 4.5/10
Okay, at least everything was one style. But there were a lot of issues here as well. For one, the blue and pink clouds weren't very nice. When making a level like this, stick to one color, preferably blue. Also, there was a lot of cutoff regarding bush placement, as well as a couple other BGOs. The doors in some of the inside sections were square, despite others being... not square. You sticked to the same style and theme, a SMB2 grassland. But...

WHAT THE HECK WAS THIS?

Also, you missed a block here. I might have done this, but...

Summary

GOOD
-Sticks to one theme
-Okay length
-Decent graphics

BAD
-WHAT WAS THAT THING AT THE CHECKPOINT
-Untimed spike death traps
-These traps were claimed to be removed
-NPC spam
-Cutoff in a few places and a missed block
-Unavoidable shell
-Almost unavoidable stilt-walking Shy Guy
-Clashing and misplaced clouds
-Many other things...

Overall Score - 3.75/10
This level has too many issues to get a good score. I'm sorry. At least your level will make the cut for Average, instead of The Trash Can.

@ andialifbatara:

Now you know to remove the link to the "original version" when you update your level! ;)

In all seriousness, I'm pretty sure that Choco wasn't talking about the spike traps that you removed; rather, Choco is referring to the ones that appear/disappear without warning just after the 144. Even if Choco is referring to the ones you removed, everything else about Choco's review still stands. In fact, there are still quite a few things that Turtwig and I mentioned that you didn't bother to fix as well...

Yes, I was talking about the ones at the 144.
