Hey everybody, it's been a while. I just have a question about the alternate editor that's been floating around.
Is it worth the download? What are the advantages/disadvantages to it? I am trying to decide if I want to switch over to it. Is it easier to use than the original editor or is it more comnplicated?
Thanks for the replies in advance.

I've been finding it a lot easier and more practical to use, though I haven't done much with the integrated editor. It's more organised, has support for custom graphics, an integrated NPC text file editor etc. and it's generally more intuitive and customisable in its menus, toolbars and the like. You can find objects more easily, zoom the level view, place rectangles of objects by simple drag & drop, quickly select, move, copy etc. any number of objects as well as change their properties, collectively replace them, and so on.
In short, it has a lot of features, but due to the way it's organised, I actually find it simpler to figure out how to do things than in the standard editor because it's more logical and intuitive. Take placing a "sizable" object, for instance: the integrated editor has you clicking arrow buttons to try and resize it before you place the object, while in PGE, you just click and drag the sizable object to the size you want it to have and can also resize it later. What PGE seems to lack right now is the option to test your levels straght from the editor,* which seems to be the only thing that the built-in one is still useful for.
(*Technically, it does have that option, but the engine it uses is an early alpha and I could only float around horizontally when I tried it.)

Get it, and make a level. You'll realise how good the PGE editor is and then you won't return to the terrible editor of SMBX (unless you want to test your level).

Even know that PGE is more advanced than SMBX does not mean that the SMBX Level Editor Program is "terrible". It's limited and it takes Longer to edit, sure but it isn't "bad" in General.

It's terrible. Period.

Looks like SMBX is being cast out. I remember seeing comments like these back when SMBX was being compared with Mario Builder and Hello's Game Master. Apparently life has come full circle...

There are Members who still uses SMBX Level Editor, Mario Builder and a lot of other Editing Programs relative to Marios Platforming. I never think a Program is terrible if I use one as it was created to Play & Edit on one if it is executed well enough by the Creator.

PGE has more features though, and SMBX is buggy (it doesn't even loads for me). Also you can create world map easier, since PGE can open multiple files at once. And you can search for world map or level map coordinates easier, if you want to make a warp between levels or in the world map.
Oh, and you can use custom scenery graphics for world map higher than 33 in PGE (you can't in SMBX), so it's definetely better than SMBX!

Exactly. Yes PGE is so far proving to be much more efficient and is a joy to work with, but without SMBX or Mario Builder or even the Hello series, what would we have to use to make levels? People make the best with what they have, but when something "superior" comes along with the possibility of "more", the best of what we have becomes trash in a sense. To see so many people being faithful to SMBX all these years and simply call it terrible or cast it aside is terrible in itself. I agree that PGE is an excellent piece of software, but I can't just toss it away like it's nothing.

I've been using PGE now for some time and I just have to admit that while it is really an upgrade from the old editor, some features are still pretty annoying, like the layout of the level/tileset windows. But I got used to it, which is nice.

You can move the windows around and resize them in any way you want. Nothing is fixed in place. Click "Window" -> "Sub Windows" to turn the tabs into little windows too.

And now it's being compared to Mario Maker :]
PGE looks pretty nice, I haven't tried it yet. I have heard of a few annoyances, like the inability to place several tiles by holding down the mouse.

You can do that just like in SMBX, even with Shift button.
