Mafia Discussion

The popular forum game that separates the good from the bad, the strong from the weak, and the loose-cannon cops from the slightly schizophrenic. That's all after we figure out who's who, of course.

Hey Pseudo-Dino just out of curiosity did you get the story-telling aspect every phase from me? I haven't really seen it used in any other Mafia game.

No, not specifically from you sorry lol. I'm pretty sure Layla used it back in M5 to some extent. I just like writing hilariously bloody death messages is all.

Sincr this is pretty much irrelevant to the current game, I figured I'd post it here:

Yeah, as soon as the cop is dead (or there are no other roles to determine the color of someone), you can not find out FOR SURE if someone is mafia, so you have to search if here is anything suspicious in their posts. That's also what you do before anyone roleclaimed to be cop, since you just don't have anything else to go for. That's why I point out every little thing that might be suspicious in someone's post, since if someone commits many of these small suspicions, it adds up and make th eerson seem more and more suspicious. You HAVE to go after one's post in the topic or PMs if you don't know who the cop is/he is dead.

Mafia is a game of taking risks and deciding who you do and don't trust. I don't see how the game is flawed.

Have any of you ever tried finding someone and interrogating them? That's a good way to get information.

Well...this isn't the actual Mafia. We can't force anyone to talk, and nothing is a real-life life or death situation. The definition of "interrogate" you're trying to use here doesn't really work in a fictional environment.

It works better when there isn't an immediate townsperson claim anybody can make.

Except...it does. This is a very common tactic used in internet Mafia.

This is why the IRC (#smbxgames) is very useful. To quote another forum I go to:
Savvy-Sauce of Last Life wrote:- Interrogations - Using an instant messenger to get information out of people is extremely effective. People, and potentially wolves, will be forced to think of answers to your questions off-the-cuff, rather than being able to prepare responses. Also, it's way more extreme!

well not everyone uses IRC, but i agree that's an effective tactic.
It works better when there isn't an immediate townsperson claim anybody can make.
i agree with this as well, something like Town Of Salem's default role setup has roles for every player which makes their no safe claims (and imo, amkes the game funner as half the people arent a role that does nothing but vote)

I think it would be common sense to use IRC as a tactic, but nobody is ever on when I'm on so it kind of defeats the purpose.

Here's a guy I agree with.
When interrogated, everyone will essentially say "I'm a townie I have no info sorry man"
In ToS, the most safe claims are roles of little to no value like Medium and Escort.

It's not as simple as asking "hey man what role are you???" - interrogations are meant in part to make players slip up and look suspicious, and they often involve questions pertaining to the one being interrogated. Think less "Hey, what role is this other player?" and more "What role do YOU think this other player is and why?".

At the very least, somebody on IRC that responds to your query with "I'm a townsperson" and then refuses to answer any questions looks really suspicious.

Most people will claim townsperson and have little to no information to give away, and half the time, it's true.
The info they do give away is suspicions and stuff along those lines. Nobody would trust someone who randomly says "query me" and starts hammering questions through the roof.

It's not a matter of trusting someone who's interrogating you, and it's not a matter of giving others' information away or ratting them out.

Interrogations are often opinion-based - asking the player what their interpretation of a specific event/player is. It involves some strategical analysis, too. It's just something you guys have to try; there's no "oh no this doesn't work" because it does, it's an incredibly common and useful tactic in internet Mafia.

I have some logs of when I've been interrogated if you'd like to see them.

Sure, and logs of interrogating others as well.

I've used it a few times, and it worked once. I'm not saying it's a bad strategy, just that half the time it seems like it doesn't work very well.
