Super Metroid project

Postby xxxzzz1 » Sat Mar 01, 2014 7:23 pm

I was wondering, theoretically is a smbx project with Super metroid gameplay possible like multiple areas connected to each other and these could be done with warps connecting to other levels

Is it possible to create? Just imagine the game Super Metroid using mario graphics and created with SMBX

There was once a Metroid project handled by PikaChris I think, but got cancelled. It would be cool, but the lack of material and useful gimmicks any projects made for that purpose may look rather crappy or not so nice in my opinion. But overall it is possible.

What you're speaking of is entirely possible. I've played around with similar mechanics in the past.

Samus makes a great replacement for Link, so there's that, too.

Thanks for the help, guys.
Oh and if you hit a luigi or toad block in one level will you remain as the character
If you go to another level or does it automatically change back to mario?

After all, if you replace Link with a Samus GFX, if you hit a character block the playable will change to that character, and if it doesn't have any custom GFX it will irremediably turn to Mario/Luigi/Peach/Toad. So if you want to add those blocks you'll have to add custom GFX replacing those characters as well.

No, you stay the the character you were when you exited the level.

It's possible and I have plans for a Super Metroid project, too. I feel it's an obvious choice since Super Metroid is my favourite video game. I have a good bunch of levels for it already.

Agreed, SM is a masterpiece and I wonder why virtually no one has made a Super Metroid style project before, I have loads of ideas and gimmicks planned and we already know it is possible.

Yes, but PikaChris' got CANCELED, so technically no one still hasn't made a Super Metroid styled project before.
And it's indeed possible, but graphically in SMBX it probably wouldn't look visually appealing but that's just me. Good luck if you're aiming to make one, that's all I can and want to say.

Sorry mate, forgot about you
Do you have any screenshots or anything?

I'm not using Super Metroid graphics, it's going to be SMB 3 styled graphics, I've already started and it looks pretty darn good if I do say so myself

Super Metroid can't be perfectly emulated, mainly because... well, you can't play as Samus. Part of the core gameplay of Samus is jumping and shooting, and none of the characters in SMBX shoot, except when given powerups. That means if you get hit, you effectively lose your core gameplay, which is a pretty major obstacle towards building a Metroid game in SMBX. I definitely like that people are interested in trying, though.
I imagine most people have opted to use Samus graphics replacing Link. That's the closest you're gonna get, and to be fair, you can still design a pretty good game around that concept, albeit not a Metroid game in the same vein as what you'd actually expect from a Metroid game. I have a different idea for how to go about building a similar game in SMBX, but I won't be sharing it for a long time. I'd rather get down the basics of linear level design before attempting something so complicated.

Is it possible to double fireball speed? It'd make for faster shooting, and it would make her shots feel more powerful, which they should be.

That Lunar DLL thing might offer some interesting extensions to core gameplay ideas. I looked over the document on how to use it, and it comes off seeming like gameshark-esque manipulation except you can program conditions for it, which is pretty powerful and awesome. I can see that potentially being used effectively in such a project as this one, if people learn how to use it. I can vaguely see it being used to manipulate player health, which could MAYBE allow the collection of energy tanks. That's a big maybe, though, and it'd be weird because you wouldn't see their effectiveness until you got knocked down to two hearts... you'd just think you were invincible while going through each trigger of getting hit. I could be wrong though since I haven't tried it.
