The Lost Stars

Postby SilverNexez » Sun Dec 14, 2014 1:13 am

Sorry about the lack of a title picture here, I'm not that great of a computer graphic artist... Anyway, this is my first project for SMBX. Because of that, don't expect too much in the way of graphics and overall "uniqueness" to this project. Still, it's something that I think is worth trying to publish, so I posted it here along with a link to a working beta "demo". On that note, please give me reviews on this. Is it good, bad, or just plain terrible? What's the biggest complaint about my project so far? Any bit of constructive criticism will help me out.

Note that this project REQUIRES Lunadll for the full experience. The demo here only requires it for one stage.

The summary and story can both be found in the "Game Hints and Instructions" text file. This is also where you can find the names of the stars for each world, as I have not put them directly into the game (yet?).

Game Summary:
  • This is a Super Mario 64 based project, so you will collect stars to progress and unlock new stages. I've given "star titles" as per Super Mario 64 traditon, but that's almost all the out of game help you'll get. I'd say that this game is fairly puzzle oriented at points, while more platformer based on others.
  • So far, this demo contains 3 main stages(5 stars each), 3 "bonus" stages(1-3 stars each), 1 unlockable character, and 1 Bowser stage.
  • No spoilers now, but Bowser's role in this will be different than it first appears.
  • Many references to the original Super Mario 64 and some other games appear here, maybe a little too many at points.
  • By the way, if you collect at least 15 out of the 22 total stars here, you can acesss a "special stage" as part of the bonus stages.
Story:
It's just another day in the Mushroom Kingdom when calamity strikes. A strong and strange earthquake hit the area around Princess Peach's Castle. Once everything settled down, the citizens noticed that many doors in the castle had inexplicably locked themselves. It wasn't long before the cause was discovered. The Power Stars in the castle are missing. This has caused dimensional instability and has lead certain parts of the castle to connect to different locations or even universes. As usual in a crisis, the Toads quickly contacted Mario for help. This time however, his brother Luigi was nowhere to be found... Instead, accompanied by a loyal Toad tasked with retrieving the stars, Mario's next adventure begins.

This looks relatively good so far, though I would suggest using a SMW fish in the Toad Brigade screen. SMB1 and SMW doesn't tend to to great together. Also, if you're using Eyerok, I have a much better one in my graphics pack if you'd rather use that one.

Squishy rex is right, he has an awesome version in his pack. Also, the Eyerok graphic in your screen is kinda messed up (it's not a bad graphic, that's just what MSpaint does to it), Paint.NET fixes that problem. Looks good so far, I'd love to see more progress!

EDIT: the same thing applies for the downward-facing pipes in the zelda 2 level.

Yeah, I'll edit the graphics. I checked out that Eyerok and it is really good. I'll have to retweak the boss though since it was literally made of brick blocks. Paint.NET also works wonders in comparison to MSpaint.

Also, as it seems that your comments seem to be based mainly on the screenshots, I added one more spoilerific (but totally worth it) screenshot to the page. There's no point asking for reviews on the demo itself when almost no one's going to download it (busy lives and all).
