Everybody Starts Somewhere

Postby SpencerS145 » Thu Nov 27, 2014 11:06 pm

Like the title says, everybody starts somewhere. I have a start. It's here. Right now.
I spent about 2 hours (ish) working with the level editor on SMBX to produce this small and somewhat entertaining level (but most of that time was spent learning how to use it. I've just installed the game today.). When I say small, I mean... like... pretty short, though. So go ahead and try it if you feel like it; I'd appreciate some general constructive criticism to better my level designs in the future.
So I have a screenshot... And the file is below, enjoy my mediocre level

EDIT: I appreciate the review, it's very helpful, and I may make levels in the future, as long as my free-time permits.

REVIEW BY RUSSIANPOOP - Everybody Starts Somewhere by SpencerS145

Design: 8/10

Nice level design overall; it plays a lot like SMB1's levels, with decent tile, BGO and NPC placement. It is not linear and doesn't clash anywhere. The enemies have been placed carefully, as there is no enemy spamming or too few enemies. Most of the BGOs are fitting with the theme, and the only underground passage is done pretty vanilla-ish.
What caused the two missing points was the length. It was barely two screens long, even the underground passage doesn't add much to the level length.
All in all it's a very decent looking level with very typical features from SMB1.

Aesthetics: 2.5/5

There are no custom graphics overall, what is not especially necessary, but it would enhance the originality of the level very much. The graphic choice (SMB1) is not very commonly used, but fits very well with the atmosphere.

Overall: 7/10 (10.5/15)

This would work well as a level in a more classic episode, with its simple but fun design and classic-style aesthetics. This feels like something Nintendo could have done, so good job on that!
