Changing Resolution to 400x300

Postby MidiGuyDP » Fri Nov 28, 2014 4:53 am

Hi guys! I just had a little question.

When SMBX is in a Windowed Format, it's 800x600. I want to resize it to 400x300 (To make it run better when recording videos). Is there an easier way to do it other than using the mouse on the edges? (Which would probably take forever to get exactly right.)

Good question. No, there is no easy way. I think you could make it a bit easier by zooming in to the screen using the magnifier glass tool and then finding a way to have a 400x600 block over the SMBX window all the time so you could use that as help to get the level window to be of the accurate size.

Theoretically you could use a program like Sizer.

However, the real question is this: What happens to the 1x1 pixels made when Mario moves because of how SMBX interlaces the animations? Do they blur, or do the individual pixels sometimes render and sometimes don't? Hmm...

Okay, I tried it myself and I was able to do it using this method.

Image

I created a 400x300 image in Paint.NET (Microsoft Paint will probably do as well) and brought the SMBX window upon it as shown in the screencap above. Then I resized it so the vertical edges match with those of the Paint.NET image. I zoomed into the screen using the Magnifier Glass tool to make this easier. A 500% zoom should make it fairly easy.

Image Image

All right, at this point it was 300 pixels in height. Getting the horizontal edge dragged correctly was a bit trickier. I placed the level window so it touches the left side of the SMBX window and then I just counted the specific point where the level view would reach 400 pixels starting from the left side of the program window. It's between the Backgrounds and NPCs tab buttons.

Image

The red area in the above image marks the distance between the 400 mark and the NPCs tab button. It's 2 pixels. Match the right of the level window with the left edge of the NPCs tab button and then drag it two pixels to the left and you're done!

Now to answer Deoxys's question, when there would appear no 1x1 pixels in the view, it will look fine like in the images I posted above but when they go 1 pixel off of the 2x2 pixel grid, stuff will begin looking like this:

Image

So when you play, everything will switch rapidly between the good-looking view and the weird distorted view as shown in the above screen. But it is a fascinating idea to play SMBX in a 400x300 window. You can use the Magnifier Glass to zoom by 200% so the window will be 300x400 but zoomed so the pixels will all be 2x2, like if you were playing a SNES emulator!

You can also use the screenshot button when in the actual game to see what the pixels of the window are. :)

Thanks for your help. I was thinking that since most gfx in smbx is made of 2x2 pixels, resizing it to exactly half that would mainly just bring them to 1x1 pixels though it would still look like clean. Though I see that because of animations, it still wouldn't be perfect.

I've pretty much confirmed it was 800x600 when I was editing videos from lp your level (Though that's without the border and header of the window)

I also found soemthing related to this: there's a alt or control + z or x configuration that gives SMBX smooth fullscreen. It crashed when I took a screenshot.
