How to SMBX

Alright, since
some people still haven't figured it out, here is a detailed tutorial on how to do basic stuff in SMBX, like for example
1. Downloading a Level
First you pick a level that you want to download. For this example, I picked PGE Flagship, made by the marvelous zlakergirl357.
Every level post has a download link somewhere at the bottom, it is one of the requirements of a level thread to have on this forum, because otherwise it will get locked.

Click it.
This should take you to a file uploading site like Mediafire, Dropbox or something similar to that.
There, click the download link. (1) Make sure you click on the right one, some download sites have malicious ads that are disguised as download links.
Next, when asked where to save your file, locate your SMBX folder (2) and open your "worlds" folder.

This next step is optional, but I recommend you doing it to keep your folders organized.
When inside the world folder, right-click and create a new folder. Name that folder something like "level". This is where you will keep your standalone levels, that don't belong to any particular episode.
Save your file inside of that folder.

Next, locate the file you just saved inside your SMBX > worlds > level folder.
Now unzip the level into a seperate folder, using a program like WinZIP, WinRAR, or 7zip. I recommend getting one of the latter, because WinZIP isn't able to unzip files that aren't specifically .zip files.

Now open SMBX.
In SMBX, click on "Open". (1)
This will open a window that shows your SMBX folder. There, click on Worlds > Levels > Folder with the name of the level
Inside that folder is where the level file is located. Click on it and then click on the "Open" button at the bottom of the window. (2)
Now your level will load. By pressing F5, you can play it, by pressing F6 you can play it with two people. (3)

2. Using Custom Graphics
First, make graphics for your level that you want to use, or download one of the various GFX Packs this forum has to offer.
(If you need help on how to download something, see Step 1. of "1. Downloading a Level".)
If you're done, select all of the graphics you want to have in your level and copy them.

It should be noted that you can't add new things to SMBX. You can merely edit the graphics of already existing things, and in the case of NPCs, edit their behavior using a textfile that has the same name as the gfx of the NPC and will also be placed among the custom gfx. If you want to know what block your gfx is supposed to replace, look in your SMBX > graphics folder. Your graphic has to have the same name as the already existing gfx.
It should also be noted that SMBX works with .gif files, and your graphics NEED to be .gif files, otherwise they will not work. If you have trouble making .gif files with MS Paint, I recommend you use an online converter or use an image editing program like Paint.NET.
Now, in the same folder that your level is located, create a new folder with the
exact same name as your level.

Now paste all your custom graphics and NPC codes into that folder.

If you now open your SMBX level, the graphics should have updated. If your SMBX was already opened, simply save your level for your graphics to update. If you are using PGE, you need to refresh your level by pressing F5,
after you saved.
Here a before/after:

I hope these tutorials are helpful for people who are new to SMBX. I'll add more tutorials in the future, this was just a quick thing I made to help someone on IRC out.

Download the original version, then you'll learn how to not make a SMBX level :^)

You need to delete system32, it causes conflicts with SMBX.

There's a key step that you forgot to mention, and I believe that it's this step that most newcomers have trouble figuring out: After opening SMBX, click the "Level Editor" button.
Do not click the "Start Game" button, as this only lets you play full episodes, not stand-alone levels.

While that is a direction, I don't feel it's necessary to put in the guide since it's more common sense than anything since it says "Level Editor".

You'd be surprised. Everyone I know who has had a problem opening levels was missing that step.

But when you open it there are 2 buttons. One says level editor and the other start game. So i dunno.

I can't find any of my levels on my File Explorer. I tried doing what you said, but the graphics are still the same.

I saved them in the Worlds folder, but they won't appear on the File Explorer, even though they appear in the SMBX Editor saving box.

If your files are located inside the program files, you might want to move them into your Desktop and see if that's any different from showing up datas inside the worlds folder or not.
