Spiritual Springs

Postby Lyndis » Sat May 16, 2015 3:41 am

Mario is going for a trip around the mountains to find the springs of life and the answer to the universe... Nah, joking! He's just going to get a power star.

This level took quite a while to finish, i'm really happy with the results! :3
The level is playable with all character expect Link.
5 dragons coins to collect and some hidden lives... Don't forget to find the Tanooki powerup!

Some screenshots showing various parts of the level...

Very great looking level.

Level design is basic but very tidy and I enjoyed the level.

One thing I noticed: Can you move the sign in the cave a little to the left? It is directly below the pipe, if you are pressing up in order to get through the pipe you will accidentally read the sign, so you have to approach the pipe from the right or you have to time pressing up perfectly.
And a question: Are the dragon coins supposed to reveal a secret exit in the full game version? Seems like a lot of effort just for an extra life.

Thanks for taking the time to test my level :3

I took in account what you said about the sign, it was kinda placed in a rush without any thinking done. x)

And in the full game, the dragons coins are effectively supposed to reveal a power star, but i wanted to make the power star unavoidable for levels in the secret world... (this level being part of the secret/special world) Might add another special reward for finding them all... :3

Spiritual Springs Review

What I liked about the level:

The level has some very good aesthetics that's for sure. The music was an excellent choice and same things can be said about the tileset and the sceneries. The little birds and the fog was a cool addition to the level. The design was very fun, since it had some backtracking and you made the player go all sort of directions. The gameplay was fairly nice and the number of enemies and enemy variation was also nice. The placement of them was also good. Adding the Switch Block was also an cool addition.

What I didn't liked about the level:

Now to be honest, while the level has some really cool stuff, there is something I feel is a problem in the level. I can't say the level had anything special that made it stand out from other levels I've played. Not saying that the level is a complete rip-off, I just can't find that anything that really attracted me. In my opinion, a gimmick, mini-gimmicks or some variation of items or some sort would've made the level way more fun.

So in summary:

+ The design was very fun.
+ The aesthetics were great.
+ Placement of objects was good.
+ The gameplay was fairly good.

- Didn't really have anything that attracted me.

My Score: 8/10

The level was nice and all, I just felt it didn't appeal me that much. Moved to Pretty Good.
