ok, just a place p2 can't interact with p1, but can do unimportant stuff or something like that. Or a path under p1 so that p1 can respawn where he/she died
but p2 can't get ahead or out. (using events to unlock the path for p2 so p2 progresses with p1 but not ahead) example: killing enemies to remove a block in p2's tunnel. and make sure that link (p1) can't use the path himself. so use link only pass blocks for the area you want p1 to respawn. example:
l=link only block
a= any solid block
b= block to be removed so p2 can progress
1=p1
2=p2 (NOTE) the path HAS to be 2 blocks tall and with no hazards in it.

and put a link character block over p1's spawn and surround p1's spawn with link pass only blocks so p1 cannot be other characters
