Mushroom Fields (Project Level 1-1)

They're not that bad, but they're not that good either.

Mushroom Fields (Project Level 1-1)

Postby SamyPlaysSMBX » Fri May 08, 2015 6:24 pm

Hello everyone and today I have a cool level from my current project (SM2DW). This has lots of cool graphics and a hope all of you will enjoy it! It is based of SM3DW with the same music and of course the 3 green stars to collect (No Stamps, Sorry). Now, yes i know that I posted this in casual levels. That is because I had know idea on how to post levels here.

Well, first thing's first:
Spoiler: show
You didn't forget to include the CGFX, but since the level's name doesn't match the name of its folder, the CGFX won't show up. You should either remove the "1-1 " from the level's name or add the "1-1 " to the folder's name.

Anyway, this level is kinda meh. Not only is it really short (there are only 2 sections [section 3 is too short to count], and they're only about 4 screens wide), but there also isn't much NPC variety, either (only Goombas, Koopas, and Cat-Goombas). Also, despite the level's short length, the checkpoint is too close to the exit; it should be placed right after warp 1 and 3. The stars didn't add anything to the level, either, since they're all in extremely obvious locations and are incredibly easy to reach. You shouldn't put them in unintuitive locations, but you also shouldn't put them directly in the player's way, either. Also, there's a random pipe in the sky in section 2 that doesn't lead anywhere.

Summary:
GOOD:
-Graphics aren't terrible.
-Music fits the level well.
-Block placement is passable.
-Section 2 had a neat idea; you should expand upon that.

BAD:
-Level and folder don't share the same name.
--LEVEL IS REALLY SHORT.
--LOW NPC VARIETY.
-Pointless stars.
-Pointless pipe.

In conclusion: just because it's the first level in your project doesn't mean it has to be incredibly short and boring. You should scrap this and try to make something less generic. I'd say this deserves a 4.5/10.

P.S. If this is the first level in your project, it would be a good idea to add something in-game that tells the player that he/she can climb trees.

I think taking the midpoint away would give this level a fair length for a first level for an episode.
Also, I think low NPC variety is nothing bad for a first level.

Even as a so-called "first level," it could use some work. Not all first levels have to be filler levels.
