This is a remake of Super Mario RPG for SNES that I started on 7/18/2010 and it went live on 4/20/15. Luigi has been replaced by Bowser, Toad has been replaced by Mallow, and Link has been replaced by Geno in the character selection portion. The characters are silly and attacks draw inspiration from attacks from in SMRPG. I'm a MASSIVE fan of the original and have played it over a hundred times and this is my labor of love. Using my strategy guides and copy of the game, I made a 1:1 recreation of the original into 2D form. There are very few times I deviated from the source material so that I could create a very familiar vibe to a new face. Experience awesome boss fights and relive the adventure in 2D glory.
Now as for the game. The game is 100% beatable as all characters. You can choose to play as any character at any time. I felt restricting character access would take away from simply enjoying the game. If you are ever lost in town, this is an "RPG" so make sure to talk to everybody. *TWO PLAYER WARNING* There is one point in the sunken ship where you can go into multiple doors to solve puzzles. Both players need to be inside these rooms to complete the puzzle due to how the split screen works in this segment. So go out and collect all 7 stars, use the shiny stone in Molleville to access the special boss. Defeat the special boss and unlock the brand new world I created to tribute another personal favorite game.
The game starts off pretty smooth and easy to get you caught up to speed on how things are going to work. By the time you hit the third world and enter Moleville the difficulty will start to ramp up. Make sure to stick it out to the later levels as they do become more and more spectacular as you go on. Try not to let the simplicity in the beginning to be too off-putting. I chose to keep the screenshots simple because I just want to show the basics of map design being similar and that sprites are updated. You could say this game is not 100% finished because normal enemies are simply goombas, etc. in a lot of cases. I'm not that great at sprite work and it takes so much time that I had to compromise. It's safe to say this is the final version because I don't think I'll get the urge to update the sprites fully. All of the important sprites like main characters and bosses have appropriate sprites. I may end up doing one last update to this game as I realized I kind of failed on the dialogue. Some of it is still kind of placeholder... ish... and needs to be updated. Especially since the dialogue of the original game was so good.
You can watch playthrough videos on my youtube channel if you would like to get a feel for the game or if you would rather watch it instead. They can be found here:

*IF YOU HAVE SMBX ON YOUR PC ALREADY*
Just put the game on the desktop and play from the icon in the folder. The game has been modified a lot so merging it with existing SMBX folders will screw up your other SMBX games.
This is my first experience with anything game development related. I had a passion and I put in a lot of effort but it is not perfectly refined. If you play it, I at least hope you have a little bit of fun and enjoy some of the themes and throwbacks of SMRPG.
I hope you enjoy this labor of love.

Sorry this comes with a Demo version (which at this point is totally pointless so my bad on that) and the full version as well. When selecting the game just go down to the Super Mario RPG option. Sorry for the confusion.
New link has been added to the post that does not have the demo version on it. If you downloaded an earlier version you can go into 'smbx' > 'worlds' and just delete the demo to prevent confusion.

1. How do I race Boshi?
2. What do I do in Grate Guy's Casino?

Very good questions... difficult answer is nothing. Both of these were sadly neglected to to severe lack of inspiration. Yoshi's Island became a reason to introduce Yoshi into the play experience. Grate Guy's Casino.... I originally wanted to do games but everything I did seemed too weak. I thought about just adding a few 1-ups to the room but I felt it wasn't enough and ultimately left it blank... which is silly. All of this does seem hilarious because I went through the trouble of making the songs in the Tadpole Pond melody section. Maybe chock it up to a rush in development. Either way I have always been disappointed I never did anything with those.

Ok well that's good to know. Now that I have six stars I need some help remembering where the 6-star doors and pipes were.
(note: I had to cheat because I couldn't get out of Monstro Town but I'm playing the levels otherwise. I even beat Jinx with 1-heart Peach!)

Yup for Monstro you go into the first house and talk to the lady downstairs, then upstairs to talk to the star, and back down the stairs to talk to her and start a sequence in which you leave through the pipe outside on the left.
Ya there are a couple 6 star pipes. One is in Rose Town for the "Lazy Shell" and another is a trade sequence in Moleville causes you to be able to go down a "pipe" in Moleville and fight the special boss Culex.

While I do like the idea, I also feel that we'd need graphics that look as if they were taken from about the same height in a 3D atmosphere (rather than a view from above that you normally get from SMRPG). On the other hand, the above view does work well on the overworld map.
As for the graphical pairing, I do feel that the tilesets will also need to look like they could have easily come from SMRPG. Fortunately, all you might need to know is how to skew images on a program such as Paint, since the angle always remains the same.

Hello there! I saw your project! Yeah, it looks good. But the custom NPCs you've used are too small. And nothing else is custom. Anyways, your project looks cool! I'm looking forward to play it!

Update: Uploaded a new version of the game that has a few changes and graphical fixes. Very minor changes that wouldn't require a redownload.

The clashing SMRPG character sprites are lame, but they don't bother me nearly as much as how extremely boring the gameplay is. There's no platforming, no challenge, no interaction between different enemies, no interaction between enemies and stage geography, way too much empty space, no clever stage design. Every stage is just completely flat with enemies and powerups lined up in rows one after another. A good SMRPG demake would find ways to cleverly re-interpret the stages of the original game into an experience that was still enjoyable in the same ways as any other 2D Mario platformer game. All you've managed to do is re-interpret the stages of the original game into a 2D experience that can technically be played through.
You also somehow managed to remove all the charm from the dialogue, a feat which seems almost impossible, since all you'd have had to do to keep the charm was keep the original dialogue with its original pacing and all the movements/gestures during the cut scenes.
Don't give up; you have a framework for a game here that can be built upon. I look forward to a future version of this that is more fun.

V1.03 (Final?) is live. World 1 and a few other stages were flat and boring so I did a better job at the level design. Some stages had music that didn't quite fit so that got fixed as well. It's mainly visual changes but hopefully it takes some of the blandness out of the first world.

Honestly, when I saw this, I thought it would be good to give it a review and a good overview of it, or at least my overview on it.
Besides that, I can see you put effort into it, although it could be better, not to be rude.
