On Bumping Topics

Postby Chip Potato » Thu Apr 16, 2015 10:53 pm

I've done a bit of thinking, and I'm really starting to wonder. What's the point of having threads from months or years ago lying around the subforums if no one can try and continue the conversation? Would it not make more sense to archive them after a specific amount of time?

I agree since all that ever happens is "Don't bump topics." and then complete silence for the rest of eternity. This would be difficult to organize, however.

People only get in trouble for bumping with a post that isn't really constructive. That said, what you described would be necessary since most cases of bumping are with nonconstructive posts. Functionally though, it would be a bad idea to move topics based on time as you said. Instead of using time as done on RVLution with automatically locking threads causing this situation: http://rvlution.net/forum/16-site-discussions/ perhaps it would be better to find a way to manage old topics based on how old they are AND where they appear on the forum pages.

There is no point in moving old topics. That would just throw them into a giant forum where'd they get disorganized. There's nothing wrong with dead topics, and you're free to revive one if you have something meaningful to contribute.

What about allowing people to bump, but if the thread has to be under 2 months old.

You are allowed to bump a topic as long the post is meaningful.

This probably isn't really a big issue for this site yet. As far as I can tell, all of the threads on this site only date back to late 2013/early 2014, so they're not that old.

On SMW Central, on the other hand, people sometimes bump threads that are as old as 2007 that usually belong to someone who has long been inactive or banned.
