You heard right! Smash Bros 4 Tournaments are
back, and now they will be held on
Saturdays! The second tournament is set to take place on
May 9th at 12PM PDT (3PM EST). Check your timezones if they are different from these.
Three major changes in the tournament agenda will take place.
1.) There will no longer be 3DS tournaments.
2.) The rules are far different than they were in past tournaments.
3.) Sign-ups take place on the Challonge Bracket. A list of participants will also appear on the challonge bracket.
TOURNAMENT RULES AND GUIDELINES
Tournament is Double-Elimination.
GENERAL RULES:
Mode: Stock (2) Items off. / Stock & Time: 6 Minutes / Round Format: Best 2 of 3 (Best 3 of 5 for Semifinals and Finals) / Customs: Not allowed
TOURNAMENT ETIQUETTE:
Timeliness: Be on time for your matches. A time limit of five minutes is granted; when that limit expires, you are at the mercy of your opponent. You are required to check in on Challonge within an hour before the tournament in question. Failure to do so will result in immediate removal from the bracket - no questions asked.
In the initial round, the two players may choose their fighters freely(this includes Mewtwo and Miis) and use the Gentleman’s Rule, which states that both players must agree on a stage before choosing it. Stage Striking: One player strikes two stages from the Starter Stage list (see LEGAL STAGES). The other player also bans two. The remaining stage is to be fought on.
The winner of the previous round will choose their character first and ban three stages for the upcoming round.
The loser of the previous round will choose their character last and the stage on which the players will fight. The stage must not be either of the three that have been banned by the winner of the previous round. (i.e. If the winner bans Battlefield and Final Destination, those two stages cannot be chosen by any means unless the winner changes his or her mind.)
No-Go Rule: You can’t take a player to a stage that they’ve already lost on (unless they agree).
Stalling is not tolerated. (i.e. Luigi Ladder and Rising Pound)
There is no sudden death. If a match is concluded and both players have equal stocks, then the player with the least damage wins. If both players have the same stocks and same damage percentage, then a one-stock rematch is to be held.
If a suicide move leads to sudden death, the initiator wins. If the results screen declares that they lost, then they lost. This includes but is not limited to: Bowser, Ganondorf, Kirby, King Dedede.
Johns are not tolerated... even though Johns are cool. (i.e. I did a recovery fail, so that match doesn’t count!)
REPORTING SCORES:
The winner of each round is required to report the scores of the set to Yoshibrothers through Private Message(PM) (See COMMUNICATION).
LEGAL STAGES:
Normal-Form Stages:
Starter Stages / Neutrals: Battlefield / Final Destination / Smashville / Lylat Cruise / Delfino Plaza
Counterpicks: Castle Siege / Duck Hunt / Halberd / Kongo Jungle 64 / Pokemon Stadium 2 / Skyloft / Wuhu Island / Town and City
Ω-Form Stages: Permitted
Custom Stages: Not allowed
COMMUNICATION:
An IRC chat will be the primary method used to allow each contestant to communicate with their fellow Smashers and opponents, which is accessed through StarNet. You are required to utilize the personal message feature to communicate with your opponent. If you are not sure about how to do so, use the /query command with the recipient’s name, or double-click their username as located in the names list on the right-hand side of the client.
Chat:

Challonge Bracket/Tournament Sign-Ups:
http://challonge.com/smashmedead
Its encouraged that you sign yourself up for the tournament on challonge.
The brackets are not final.
If you have any questions, please feel free to post here or PM me.

I'll think about it. I'm glad you're at least still doing this stuff.

Signed up. Bring it on.
Also, ban Norfair. It's a terrible competitive stage unless it's 8-player Smash.

Yes, I agree with that about Norfair. Port Town Aero Dive is also a pretty bad idea since the cars are so powerful.
If you think the stage list needs that many stages, I might suggest Pokémon Stadium 2 as a counterpick; none of its hazards are TOO powerful.

Are going to do Team Tournaments? Just curious, because I have a friend that kicks ass at this game.

Your friend can just join this tournament alone.
Also, will Mewtwo be allowed to be used?

Custom Stages might not be that bad of an idea, since you'll be able to share them with the update on April 15th, but maybe it's too soon for them. Maybe next time.

alright, I should probably read the op more carefully.

And Lucas when the time comes around. For allowing custom stages....depends if it's legal or not. Maybe we should have judges for these "LEGAL" custom stages people want to create.

Custom Stages are banned entirely for a multitude of reasons. I can remove Norfair and Port Town Aero Dive if you guys want in favor of other stages. Just tell me what you would recommend(Pokemon Stadium 2 is being considered, though I'm really unsure about it). I could on the other hand take them out without replacing them.

I promise that PS2 is far more balanced than either Norfair or Port Town. It's used as a counterpick in many high-level Sm4sh competitions. I don't know of any other stages to recommend though.

I'll make Pokemon Stadium 2 a counterpick. I do have a few potential ideas for the second stage: Luigi's Mansion, Skyworld, Windy Hill Zone. Whether or not one of these is a counterpick is up to you guys.

Luigi's Mansion: No real harmful gimmicks. I'll give this a
YES.
Skyworld: The only gimmick is the breakable platforms.... I remember you can get spiked against the floor on one of the platforms and fall to your doom with no recovery time, so I say
NO.
Windy Hill Zone: I have gone to an official Smash tournament before, and I can tell you this stage is banned, for a good reason. If you get caught on the bottom of the spring, you're dead. The springs come around every now and then, and the wooden ferris wheel thing can kill you because you're off-screen. So this is a definite
NO for me.
There's my opinion, and do you other smashers agree with me?

Luigi's Mansion is OK, but there are easily abusable "caves of life" under the hard breakable platforms. I'll give it a shaky yes but it's not the best idea in my opinion.
Skyworld also has a lot of caves of life, under the breakable platforms, and you can get meteored through the clouds once the platforms are gone. Definite no, in my opinion.
Windy Hill is way too big to be a good idea, I think. Also the ferris wheel and springs, like SWY64 said, and then also the weird gravity, which lets people survive a lot longer than they could normally.

I'm basing these around tournaments I have seen participated in where the number of participants is 80 or more. This is all experimental, if anything. Pokemon Stadium 2 has been added. Norfair and Port Town Aero Dive have been removed. If anyone has a good idea on a final counterpick, please speak up. Other than that, we're probably fine with stage choices.

Assuming the April 15th Update brings Miiverse, that'll be legal as it's just Battlefield with a Smashville main platform.
