Background...
This level is entirely in Portuguese. AirShip is Brazillian. Feijut is a mix of "feijão" (bean) with "donut."
In Detail...
We already start with two paths to choose. The player spawns in front of a star passage that I really liked (it's nothing special, but I really liked the look of it). A sign right in front of us says "Dear travellers, DANGER! High volcanic activity area!" I guess we'll go to the left then.
In the left, there's a literal donut block. I mean, it's not the SMB3 donut blocks that fall when you stand on them, it's an actual donut. I thought it was a powerup, but it's a block. There's a SMB3 recolored Yoshi's Island Podoboo-ripoff, some sizables, a Hammer Bro and coins to the left. The left path takes us to a... an X Coin? It replaces a Dragon Coin and looks nice.
Going back to the beginning and heading to the right, we face some square Goombas and a block edited from NES Lost Level's BGOs (the square goomba is one of airship's gfx that made me think he was a drug user before, i mean just look at the graphics he makes). Going ahead we get to a sign saying "Sign #16 - I've seen mini volcanoes during my journey, I have to be careful, because they throw fireballs at any moment..." The volcano is a nice idea and works smoothly. He shoots fireballs upwards, like a Volcano Lotus but faster. There's some Piranha Plants that work like the modern-day Piranha Plants (they just stand there on the ground instead of going up and down inside pipes). There's also some Cheetos clouds that look solid but they're BGOs. An arrow sign leads us to a cave, where there's Podoboo ripoffs, Piranha Plants and square Goombas. The cave doesn't last long, and after coming out of it we're greeted by a Hammer Bro. Now I see that the Hammer Bro actually shoots beans (what the fuck). There's some rock pyramids that I bet are supposed to look like mini volcanoes, but end up looking like lazy level designing. We then encounter two mini-volcanoes, some sizables and then a flashing exclamation mark. The exclamation mark is there to warn us of the Lost Levels rocks coming down on us.
Another sign: "Sign #20 - While I walked through the mountains, I noticed there's rocks with eyes, and these same rocks almost crushed me during my walk, to whoever is reading this, TO BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THE ROCKS WITH EYES!! Thanks." So the guy was just having a casual walk through a dangerous volcano area? What the fuck? What kind of plot is this? I'm excusing this because it's Mario, but it looks even sillier in Portuguese. Anyway, there's some more square Goombas on a rock half-pyramid, another mini volcano and brown Koopas. We climb another rock pyramid, this one really large, and go to the skies.
Now, here it gets confusing. The sky background completely doesn't fit with the background used in the previous section. The clouds suddenly white up, but the Cheetos clouds still have sand color and look solid (they should be lighter and not have black outlines). We climb TWO rock pyramids (!!!) while being chased by a single Parakoopa, get a quick straight-grounded break and then go down another rock pyramid. This one actually has a slide-down-and-go-up gimmick, so it works. It leads us to a cave (this time it's a larger cave) with lava (it's not a cave, it's a volcano). In the far left of the cave there's a passage that leads to a magma room with a sign saying "Defeat all the enemies!" The enemies are a Podoboo ripoff and actual Podoboos, we defeat them with shells (boring). Our reward is... an X coin (BORING!)! I hope these X coins give an actual reward in the end of the level.
Back to the volcano, we go through some sizables, one of them dripping lava (it's one of those "why don't lavafalls hurt Mario" cases I don't really give a shit about). We take a skull raft to a really short lava lake, and in a platform we meet a sign saying "Sign #29 - I just entered some kind of cave, with a lot of lava, I hope to get out of here alive..." Does the guy get out of there alive? Suspense! Moving on we face a mini-volcano and an exclamation mark. Now we know what the exclamation marks mean, so the "rocks with eyes" aren't such a surprise. But you still have to pay attention. There's another exclamation mark and more sizable, and finally a checkpoint. Right in front of the checkpoint is another sign: "Sign #32 - Gravity seems to not function correctly in this cave, because the lava floating in the ceiling..." Can you guess what word AirShip forgot? Also, is this a volcano or a cave? Anyway, we enter a passage to a cave with less lava.
Or so it seems! Lava rises and you have to be quick to go up. Now this is what we're talking about! Some platforms are away from one another, punishing those who weren't fast enough to reach the platform. There's two X coins along the way, and you have to be fast to get them! This is the best section of the level, and it's the last section where you do stuff...
Or so it seems!² There's lot of exclamation marks around, and they're all warning you that the volcano WILL erupt! This is a nice Megaman X2-inspired scene, executed almost perfectly. My only problem with it is that the lava rises and is eventually cut-off-ed. After jumping through some sizables, you tag the SMB3 exit and the level ends.
In General...
It's a level full of ups and downs. It has some nice and innovative gimmicks, like the mini-volcano or the exclamation marks, but it has some bad design parts (the rock pyramids, the boring "defeat all enemies" throwaway challenge). AirShip says the level is really hard, but the only hard part is right in the end, when you have to escape the lava. But what a scene that was! Too bad the lava cut-off ruins it. The Cheetos clouds are distracting, too. They look like something you'd step on.
Overall Rating: 6/10 stars
A great level! But it needs more polish before getting a higher score.
