I always struggle with placing coins. Where should I place them so they look good and feel good as a player?

Depends on the level and your taste. Coins on the ground usually look bad, though.

Just don't place them randomly. Place them with some thoughts and don't place too much coins overall.

As Turtwig said, never directly on the ground, unless they ascertain a very particular purpose and never directly on top of ? Blocks. I find that I more usually place coins as a way of directing the player in groups of about 3-6. Larger groups should be left for bonus areas, so they actually are "bonuses" and not just extra coin spammed areas. These exceptions of course would be P-Switch related placements etc. Overall though, I would recommend playing others' levels, seeing how coins are placed and also experimenting yourself, but really as long as they aren't spammed or just erratically placed for the hell of it, then anything can be good.

There's no "perfect coin placement", and coin placement shouldn't even be important in first place. As long a you don't spam them too much anything is fine.

If you struggle with Coin Placement, look at levels in 2D Mario games. I usually make patterns, like up, down, up, down. I make circles with coins, or like the 5-pattern on a dice. But don't place it randomly, it looks bad. And for Coin Blocks, I usually make them Brick Blocks with 5, 10, or 15 Coins in them.

Coin Placements can be anything as others already said. Coins are mostly Guiders like the Players often aim for the Coins like get to the correct Path easily. On Bonus Rooms or Little Places of where you have to go back again after you get it in first it can oftenly get even more Coins than usual on your Path. Of course it is Kind of a bad Thing if it gets incredible overused since alone if you collect 100 of them you get a 1UP (so a 1UP/Green Mushroom is worth 100 Coins, obviously). Please make sure that all (or most, depends) of the Coins are collectable since putting Coins over a Pit which is actually a Trap is a bad Thing to do no matter of how you want it to be (except for P Switch runs of course)...
